My DS has been hitting physical milestones early or on the early end of normal but I'm always reading on here how a bunch of LOs are saying dada, mama etc and mine isn't even close. I've never heard him utter the d sound at all (DH said he did a while back but I never heard it). He makes um mum mum mum sounds and goo sounds. He babbles nonsense and lots of vowel sounds and is currently blowing raspberries like no ones business but I'm concerned that he reallt doesn't make consonant sounds yet...should I be or is he normal?
Re: Should I be concerned yet?
First, I need to say that the babies on the Bump are all light-years ahead of any real-life babies I know...strangely...
That being said, my LO was seen at 4 months by Early Intervention for a head lag, which has since resolved itself with a little exercise at home -- no biggie. At that visit, though, we were told at 4 months that her verbal expression was at 6 months, and admittedly, she started cooing at 3 weeks old, so I know her verbal has always been really good. She JUST started repeating syllables this week (ba-ba-ba-ba and ma-ma-ma-ma mostly). She has been making mixed consonant-vowel sounds since 4 months, and over 6 and 7 months, she was into screaming in tune and raspberries, etc., but the real babbling just started.
Also, I have to say that she just woke up one morning doing this and hasn't stopped since. Things TRULY happen overnight with these babies!
So my point is that even though some kids are saying "mama" and "dada" (supposedly) on here, my LO is not, and she is officially advanced verbally for her age, per Early Intervention and my pediatrician.
Nope. As pp's have said, all kids develop at different paces. DD first said and meant "mama" at 7 months (she was babbling it for about a month before that) and is now starting to say dada.
BUT she is not crawling- she has been scooting backwards only for 2 months now, but no forward movement or crawling going on here. She cannot go from laying to sitting either, but likes to "walk" with me holding her hands. I have seen kids 2-3 months younger than DD crawling all over the place.
I just think kids go through phases where they focus on either motor or verbal development.
