Apparently my co-worker knows more than my doc....

Just a little vent:

I have this co-worker who is about 60ish. Everyday she asks me how I am or how I'm feeling. I learned pretty quickly to just say fine (or lie) b/c my answer is never quite good enough. Well now she's developed a sort of "doctor complex" and so she asks me after each appt what the doctor said...and then she proceeds to tell me what I should have told them to do differently.

Today's Example: My BP was a little high (both the nurse and then the doc checked it, 10 minutes apart) so they sent me up for a NST - everything was good. Well, after telling her that she tells me that I should have asked them to check it twice, 10 minutes apart, in the office before sending me up for testing (I hadn't mentioned yet that both the nurse and doc checked it). I tell her that they did check it twice and that they did space it out. So then she says that I should have requested that I sit down as they checked it...which I was, and I tell her that...to which she says, "oh well then you should have told them to check it while you stood for the second one!"

You know, my doc has been a doc for as long as I could walk so I am pretty sure he knows what he is doing...so I just tell her that the nurse and doc checked it and were concerned enough to want to monitor me and after everything turned out fine that we are all comfortable with where I am in this pregnancy and I don't see any need to make any suggestions to my doctor b/c I'm pretty sure he's already on top of things. I don't think she liked that answer very much. But really, she does NOT have a medical degree, nor been to nursing or medical school...but I'm supposed to rely on her advice? I think I'll pass!

  • Stop engaging her. She can't comment on what your doctor said if you don't tell her what happened.

  • I agree that you should just stop informing her any further than just saying things are fine. It's truly none of her concern in the first place, and if it only bothers you for her to respond as she does, then save yourself the stress!

  • I agree with the last couple posts, you should just try to avoid her

  • Oh good lord. In some cases, I will agree that women who have btdt may have advice that the doctors don't give, but not in this case. She's just a know it all, huh. I'd just continue to say "fine" with every question she asks.
  • sounds like my DH's aunt... it's exhausting dealing with someone like that.  Just trust that your dr is doing everything necessary and someone who's 60ish's advice is most likely outdated!  It's always sweet that people want to be so involved but it can be really overwhelming, especially when it's unsolicited.

"I'm good, baby's good" that's all people hear from me.  It might seem a little cold-especially if you have been giving more info in the past, but that is all that I feel is anyone's business.

  • I agree - stop telling her stuff. If she is willing to comment on what the doctor should have done, imagine what will happen after your LO is born and she tries to tell you what you should do as a mother. I say cut her off now.
