Constipation. I need more than Colace!

Colace, Fiber Sure in coffee, Fiber tablets and a ton of water are not cutting it this time. Dr OK'd a few laxatives but was wondering what has been proven to work for some of you :)

He said I could take Mira Lax, Milk of Magnesia and one other... Have either of these, or others, worked well for anyone else?

Thank you all so much in advance. This is getting miserable!!

Re: Constipation. I need more than Colace!

  • I've been using Senna S - it's a combo of a stool softener and a natural stimulant laxative. You can take it regularly and it's pretty gentle. I would try that or Miralax befor Milk of Mag. I can't get past the thick, chalky, sludginess of Milk of Mag - although at work if we need someone to go, we make a "Bomb" - Milk of Mag, a little prune juice and a little apple juice warmed up.

    Me (33). DH (37). DD (2.2012). MCs x4. After 4 years & 7 months, due 4.2018!

I will be keeping this in my back pocket for a few days. I am almost that desperate.

I have still been going a little tiny bit so OB is not worried. (I literally thought there was a cork in my a$$).

Ill look for the Senna S. Took one dose of Miralax last night and nothing yet.

  • I thought miralax worked pretty good

I like that I can just mix it with water and its tasteless :)

OB did say I may need a few days/doses of it for relief. I was really hoping one shot would do the trick!!

  • No advice yet but I am going to my doctor this afternoon and will be asking the same question.  Colace does nothing.  I take 300 mg per day and will go a week and a half without a movement.  I did buy some prune juice yesterday.  Yuck!  But hopefully that will help.

PLEASE report back with any suggestions!! I am the same way. Colace was working for a while. Noting in my diet, or water intake changed, but it has been close to a week. It is so awful :(

  • There is apparently some sort of laxative tea that you can get at most grocery stores. I think it's called (embarrassingly enough) Smooth Move or something to that effect. I've seen it and always laughed at the name, but it may help.

  • This is gross but Taco Bell works for me, lol.  I don't have much constipation issues but the twice I have I ordered from Taco Bell and it helped.  LoL  ewwww

  • Milk of Magnesia worked wonders for me. It took about 18 hours total for EVERYTHING but still... I felt so much better.

And um, spinach. Embarrassed Spinach salads are eaten at least every other day.

  • Colace, Senna - nothing works for me anymore now except Milk of Magnesia. I learned about it from this board and it is AWESOME.

I do not ever run out - I always have a back up bottle in my bathroom. I get the plain, non flavored original and it's awesome. I don't even measure anymore. 2 big gulps and the next morning things are moving.

It is by far the most consistent of such products I have used during the PG, and I've had life long fun issues of not going/impacted colons,...

Milk of Magnesia - try it! I drink it right before going to bed. The taste isn't bad - just no taste really - kind of thick and chalky, but worth it.

Alex has arrived! 9 pounds, 21 inches - 3 weeks early on March 2nd ~went natural - very intense. whew!~
  • The check out kid at the grocery store is going to love me :)

Milk of Magnesia, prune juice, Fiber Sure (I'll still use this in my morning coffee), and we are ironically out of toilet paper and Cottonelle wipes (I love those things).

  • I love your shopping list, you might get a few looks :) I would also try eating a bunch of pears - for some reason when I eat more than 3 I get kind of runny. Not sure if that is just me, but more fruit can't hurt you either

  • Here is my routine. Since being placed on bedrest things have slowed down considerably so OB told me to do this and it has helped. Do you drink coffee? If you do, switch to half caff or full caff in the morning while you're getting ready for work. Not sure if the caffeine gets things moving but it definitely helps me within 15 minutes. Hope this helps!

ETA: sorry I just read that you drink coffee, maybe switch it up to regular strengh

  • Cracklin Oat Bran cereal and Nexa Select prenatals have helped me. Good luck!
  • I take Miralax every other day. I have been taking it for a few years due to an anal fissure and there's no way I will ever go back to my pre-Miralax days! My doc said you can take it forever and never get "dependent" on it, it just draws more water into your colon to make things softer. I love that it's tasteless, I just mix with some juice. It does take a few days to make it all the way down the colon though...
