Milk buildup on tongue? Can't get it off!

DS has had a thick white film on his tongue since early on.  I've checked with the pedi several times and it's not thrush,it's just buildup of the milk from BF.  She said I could use a wet washcloth and try to rub it off, but that only gets a little off the tip of his tongue and I don't want to gag him!  It's not really hurting anything other than the fact that sometimes he has a sour milk breath going, and it's sort of unsightly.  But otherwise I could leave it alone, just curious if anyone else have this on their LO and have you tried to get it off?

  • if you are positive it isnt thrush and just a milk coating, I would leave it alone.

  • Just leave it be. It is not thrush. It will go away on its own.

  • We were at dr today for 2 month check-up and shots. LO also has the white tongue. The dr checked it to make sure it wasn't thrush (it's not) and she said we can just wipe it with a washcloth. Easier said than done. She recommended getting LO to suck on your finger so her tongue comes out more.  We'll try, otherwise she'll have a white tongue for awhile. :-)

Why doesn't your pedi think it's thrush? DS has thrush and I have to give him Nystatin. It's clearing up a bit.

It doesn't fit the typical symptoms and signs of thrush (patches in the side of the baby's mouth, burning/stinging on nipples for mom, signs of yeast infection on nipples, etc).  It's just a thick coating of milk on his tongue...

  • My baby has this too. We were treated for Thrush precautionary but it didnt fit the "typical" thrush symptoms....we try to wipe it off but it wont budge. We even have a friend who is a dentist who says it isnt thrush! I just hate all of the old women in my life that say passive things such as her having thrush and then I have to explain that it isnt.....annoys me!
