Anyone have/had a Roomba (or other robot vacuum thing)?

I'm thinking about getting one for Christmas because i hate vacuuming, but the Roombas are pricey.  I am looking for feedback/ reviews before purchasing.  If it actually works well, it would be worth every penny.  Does anyone here have any feedback?  Thanks!

  • I had one when they first came out. We had 5 cats and the second we finished vacuuming they would decide to fight and there was black hair everywhere....it's like they knew! I really liked it. We lived in a townhouse so there wasn't a ton of space for it to cover and it would always get caught under our TV stand but other than that it worked great. Now to prevent it from getting caught in places you just purchase another sensor. I was looking at one in Bed Bath and Beyond the other day.

  • I've sold a few different models in the past, and we currently have a 530. They're great if you know the limitations. It's not a deep cleaner, you'll need to use a normal vac occasionally, but it helps a lot for in between "real" cleanings.  They work well on low pile carpet, hardwood, etc.. But have a hard time on thick carpet. Be prepared to replace the $50 battery every 18 months, no matter how you cycle them they're doomed to fail.

I borrowed one to try it out.  It worked great for everything but dog hair.  We have a German Shepherd (who is half long-hair GSD) and it choked up as soon as it hit a clump of dog fur.  If we didn't have that issue, I would recommend it.

Ditto this.  If you have lots of dog hair I would not recommend it; ours broke very quickly but we have two hairy GSDs.

  • I love ours.  We use it downstairs on hardwood and tile, and it does a great job.  I still have to get a broom out every once in a while to do hard to reach places, but otherwise, it's awesome.  I love coming home to clean floors.
  • One more thing!  You have to be mindful of what gets left on the floor.  My rather lazy husband set his wallet on the floor and forgot about it, then the Roomba ran (we have it on a scheduler to clean at 2 everyday) and it pushed the wallet behind our bed. DH had cancelled his credit cards and gotten a new license before we found it ;)

  • Thanks for all the feedback Big Smile  i picked one up at BBB today... can't wait to use it!  (We just have one cat, so hopefully it can handle that hair.)

  • I have 2 (upstairs & downstairs) and I love them.  But we have hard floors everywhere.
