Q about diarrhea (gross, I know)...

My DS picked up some kind of a stomach virus a while ago (it'll be 2 weeks ago on Wednesday). It started with fever, which led me to take him to the doctor. While we were at the doctor's office, he began having diarrhea. The fever only lasted a few days, but the diarrhea has persisted. Now it's been nearly 2 weeks, and his BMs still aren't back to normal (he's breastfed, but before this virus, his poops had turned to an almost peanut butter consistency due to introducing solids).

He isn't showing any signs of dehydration. He still nurses great, and is still making plenty of wet diapers daily. He acts like he feels fine (he plays and laughs and acts like himself). He isn't running fever at all anymore.

Before this started, he hadn't been introduced to any new solids (he'd been having sweet potatoes, squash, etc for a while before the fever started).

Is it possible for him to have developed a sensitivity/allergy to something in my diet this late in the game? He's never had any issues before and he's been breastfed since day 1. Also, is it typical for kids to take this long to recover from a bout of diarrhea? Does it seem like I should take him back to the doctor with it again, considering the lack of fever and his general happy/well demeanor?

  • I wondered about that. I haven't tried yogurt, though, because I thought I read somewhere that little ones shouldn't have dairy before one year? Maybe I just imagined that, though...

  • OK, I googled "introducing yogurt to 6 month old" and it does sound like it shouldn't be a problem (as long as I choose a full fat yogurt that has no artificial sweeteners). I guess it's easier to break down than milk due to the active cultures in the yogurt.

I'll give the yogurt a try tonight. Thanks for the tip!

  • We went through something similar last week with one of our babies.  Our pediatrician said that it can take up to two weeks for diarrhea to resolve.
