I started them at 6.5m just to get DD to practice her pinscher. Now she eats them by herself with no problem, but she loves them so much i have to cut her off. I also break them in half so they are smaller and i don't worry about choking as much.
We started puffs right about 6 months. It has been very fun watching her different techniques for getting them in her mouth. My favorite was when she would grab a handful, put her hand up to her mouth and use her other hand to shove them into her mouth. For a little over a week now she's been using her pincer grab to pick them up, while I'm proud of her I miss watching her try to figure out how to eat them.
We started puffs at 6 months. The ped said we didn't need to get puffs since Os are basically the same thing. We started with the puffs so he could practice (and they melt in his mouth faster). After the one can, we started multi grain Os.
Pretty much what everyone else said. We are almost finished with our can and I bought cheerios to use next... D gets excited to play with them and they are the start to every meal now. I suppose we started them around 6 months. I didn't break them in half because they melt and break down easily (which is why I used puffs before O's, but I don't actually know if there's much difference).
D's got about a 25% success rate actually getting them in his mouth, so I consider it fine motor skill development and not really food.
About 6.5 months. She has just recently mastered the pincer grasp and now shovels them in. Those and the yogurt melts make her all squirmy with excitement. Great distraction during weddings and church.

I started at 6.5 months. I put a few on her tray and showed her how to pick them up and put them in her mouth. Obviously it took some practice.
