Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Has anyone resolved frequent night wakings?

Hi ladies, my son is 4.5 months, but I'm hoping to get some hope from the older babies.  Evan's never been a good sleeper. We walked the floors with him for the first three months of his life bc he refused to be put down.  He will finally fall asleep in his crib (we patted/shh'd him for hours until he stayed and now he's ok with it).  However, he still wakes up every 1.5-2 hrs all night every night.  We have a sound machine and have tried pretty much everything, but he just wants to be held (standing up! he won't let us sit in the rocker).  We tried CIO for over a week and it didn't work.  The doctor says that when he goes between sleep cycles he comes out of sleep.  I've tried to identify anything that could be waking him during the light sleep, but can't put my finger on it.  Was anyone able to resolve night wakings?  Did your kids grow out of it?  I'm at a loss.  Thanks!

Re: Has anyone resolved frequent night wakings?

  • Yes, he's in his own room.  It's a nightmare.  If I leave him in the crib he cries, if I rock him in the chair he can't get comfortable so he doesn't fall asleep.  If I try to put him in bed with me he cries.  He wants me to walk all over the house.  He's 19 lbs, I don't want to start that up again, but it's the only way he's quiet at night.  Sooo frustrating.

  • J was never a great sleeper but what little progress we made all went to hell around that age. I think it was teething. We did not do any sleep training - I felt he was too young - and he eventually grew out of it. He STTN or only wakes up once now. At that age sleep regression is normal due to teething, practicing new skills, etc. I would wait to do any more training until 6 months....especially since CIO did not work. If it's still an issue talk to your pedi.
  • My daughter was the same way for 3 months. We had to constantly be moving. It took a toll on our patience and our feet, haha. Wood floors are NOT made for walking babies at night.

We did CIO just to get her to go to bed, bc she protested being put down at all.  Once that took, we let her do her 2-3 hour wakings bc we focused just on getting her to go to bed.  After a month I started to cut out those feedings by also CIO -- which were much shorter.  She is now 7.5 months old and sleeps from 7 pm - 5 am, is fed at 5am and sleeps again until 8am.

Try CIO again. They say you sometimes have to "start over" after a break to see if baby is ready for it.  And when doing CIO you need to be consistent and stick with it at least a week.

Also know your baby will still love you in the morning:)

  • My daughter started waking every hour about a month ago.  One night I got really desperate and swaddled her again (we had weaned from the swaddle 2  before w/no issues).  She slept great and has ever since.  I nurse her to sleep, hold her until she's really out, then swaddle.  It might not be a permanent solution, but it is working for now!
