Milk allergy and soy formula

DS is allergic to cow's milk.  After EBF for almost 8 months while eliminating cow's milk from my diet, I've run into physical problems that are going to mean it is time to wean DS.  Our pediatrician recommended trying soy formula first (I never eliminated soy fom my diet and DS has been fine) before trying Nutramigen or Similac's hypoallergenic formula.

With DS#1, I was told not to try soy, but at the time DS1 was 9 weeks old.  think the reason why he's saying it is ok now is because DS2 is  older than DS1 was at the time he told me not to use soy.

Is anyone else with a LO with a cow's milk allergy successfully using soy formula?

Thanks!

  • I'm being nostalgic and browsing the boards we've 'graduated from' so I'm kind of butting in. LO was actually younger than your LO but yes, we did not do well with cow's milk and did just fine with soy. (Our Pedi jumped straight to Nutramigen but LO didn't like it and we didn't like the cost, so we tried Soy and it worked great.)

If you didn't eliminate it and LO's been fine, soy formula should be okay too.

  • Thanks for the quick response!  I gave him a bottle with 1/3 soy formula ans 2/3 BM, and with a very mild objection, he drank all 6 ounces quickly.  I'm just kicking myself in the butt for starting this in the evening,

  • DS has been on soy since 6-ish weeks maybe. Our pedi said no, not to try it. I insisted on a reason and she said "because the majority who have a milk intolerance/allergy will also have a soy allergy". To me is was insane to skip right to nutramigen/alimentum without trying soy. I figured he had been miserable with everything else so what was ONE more thing to try? He has been on it ever since and is great.
