New here and a few ?'s

Hi Ladies,

I got a BFP this morning and could not be more excited. I was wondering if any of you ladies could answer a  question for me. I am calling tomorrow to set up a confirmation appointment since I have had a few issues with my period these past 3 months. My question is:

I have a 9.5 month old that is still breastfed and I am worried I will lose my supply now with the new pregnancy. Any tips to be able to nurse continually until atleast 1 year?

TIA ladies!

  • I was only able to BF till DD was 3 months, so I can't answer your question, but I can say congratulations!! :-)

  • My DD was 4 months old and exclusively breastfeeding when I got pregnant again.  I wanted more than anything to be able to BF until she was a year.  We made it about 3 more months and then my supply completely dried up ;(  But since yours is aleady 9 months, I would guess you could make it a year!  Everyone is different though.  Good luck and congrats!

  • I BF DS till he was about a year, I think I was 15 or 16 weeks pregnant. I found that I was just getting too tired, I felt run down, DS wasn't latching well anymore, it hurt more and was just frustrating me.

I weaned him to WCM in sippy cups and it was EASY. He didn't drink out of the sippy for 2 days and on day 3 he drank the WCM from the sippy no worries. Now he absolutely adores his milk.

  • I got pregnant when DD was 8 months and my supply took a huge dip by 9 months. She was completely self-weaned by 10 months. I also had hoped to make it a year however DD did not like to nurse as the pregnancy got further along. My OB said some babies will just stop BFing when the mom is pregnant. Also I'm sure it didn't help with my lowered supply.

  • My supply dropped shortly after finding out that I was pregnant.  I wanted to make it to a year, but I didn't.  She actually switched to formula pretty easily and then to milk at one year.

  • DS was 7 months old when I got pregnant. I did notice a drop in my supply, but I still EBF until 8 months. I continued until 8.5 months when I found out that I was carrying triplets. I just thought there was only so much my body could handle. We FF from a bottle from that point until 12 months exactly. We introduced a sippy cup with water back around 6 months and were able to switch from formula in a bottle to cow's milk in a sippy by 12 months.

You should check out kellymom.com. There is lots of information about breastfeeding while pregnant. It certainly can be done!

  • My son was also 9 months when we found out we were expecting #2. He's now 15 months, I'm 24 weeks pregnant, and we're going strong nursing. My supply really dropped after the first trimester, but he loves solids and since about 10-11 months is just too busy and distracted to nurse when he could be playing or exploring, so we mainly nurse down for naps and bedtime, and once or twice during the night (though I'd REALLY like to cut that out before the baby arrives!) I've had periods of soreness and remember feeling really discouraged around 10 weeks- "can I really do this for 30 more weeks?"- but I honestly don't remember why or what was so bad, and I think it was more hormonal than anything. The most difficult part has been the past few weeks- my milk is changing over to colostrum and it's making the kid poop A LOT! I imagine this will only get worse until my milk comes in after baby, but it's manageable. I'm hoping DS will continue nursing through the rest of the pregnancy and I do expect that once he sees the baby nursing and my milk is in in full force, he's going to start nursing more during the day. Hang in there, drink as much as you can, but from what I've read there's really not much you can do for supply while pregnant. I never planned on introducing another milk while DS was still nursing but we do rice milk now and I've upped cheese & yogurt in his diet.

  • I got pregnant when DD was 9 months and was still BFing.  I did find that my supply dropped with what I was able to pump at work, so I did supplement with formula, but was still fine BFing at home.  We continued BFing morning, after work, and bedtime until DD was about 12-13 months, then weaned by the time she was 14 months.  The doctor told me I should wean by the time I was about 20 weeks.  It worked out fine b/c DD was a perfectly good eater and easily switched to WCM at 12 months.
