Babies: 6 - 9 Months

GRRR, I've created a rocker!

Our LO is 8.5 months old. When he was younger, he would fall asleep in the crib without me having to rock him. In fact, he preferred not to be rocked. However, as time went on, I got into the habit of rocking him, because I adored him falling asleep in my arms. BIG MISTAKE! Now, he won't fall asleep unless I rock him. Like right now, he is tired and I rocked him just to settle him down, and I put him in his crib. He starts fussing and stands up in his crib hitting the rail  saying mamma mamma, until I come in there and pick him up to rock him. It is VERY frustrating and I feel like I am doing it all wrong. What should I do? Help!

  • Hey there...no real suggestions from me but I can comisserate with you, I have the same issue.  He is starting to resist the rocking again though so last night at bedtime he played in his crib until he fell asleep on his own!  If you are doing it all wrong then so am I!!

  • My best suggestion is to try and slowly wean them off the rocking....like rock for less and less time each night or week or however long you choose. The No Cry Nap/Sleep Solution books give ideas/ suggestions about this. Eventually the idea is to wean them off needing movement to fall asleep. I am still rocking to sleep over here so I am right there w you! Some nights it only takes 5-10 minutes and others closer to 30 minutes. For now, it works for us so I'm going w it.

  • Thank you! So glad I'm not alone. This makes me feel so much better...or normal!

  • I was the same with my LO too. Eventually she could roll and we got lucky that she could soothe herself to sleep on her tummy with her little music projector playing and with minimal fussing. On the other hand she wakes up several times in the night and I bring her into bed with me and nurse her back to sleep.

I am not sure what to do about this either. I don't have any real suggestions.. my point is I think we all do things and all have our own issues you're not alone!

  • UGH I am so with you.  In fact I was going to ask for solutions.  We had done CIO/Ferber and it worked.  And then she got sick and was coughing so we had to hold her to sleep.  Then just as we were going to do this again, she got a stomach bug.  Well GREAT cause now she can stand....

Sigh.... tonight I think we are started CIO again.
