Babies: 6 - 9 Months

DS just turned 7 months and doesn't roll, crawl or say words

I asked the doctor about him not rolling at his 6 month appointment and was told some babies never roll and so I shouldn't worry about that.  But he isn't mobile in any form and instead of going for a toy he wants will just forget about it when he figures out he can't reach it and move on to something closer or just play with his hands and feet if nothing is withen reach.  I am not sure if I should worry about this or if he is just taking him own time to learn these skills.

Also he use to babble more but since learning to make rasberries a few weeks ago he no longer babbles.

All the other kids in my momny ground are younger then ds and are doing more then him.  DS does like to sit and stand and if holding onto something sturdy and his level (like my hand) can pull himself to standing.

So is anyone elses child still staying in one place when put down??

  • If he can pull himself standing that's great!   I'm sure he'll begin to coo more in the coming months.  DD1 didn't do anything. She never crawled.  She went straight to cruising and eventually walking.  DD1 is 2.5 and is moving into the 3 yo classroom next week.  She's ahead of the curve w/ using scissors, communication,etc...I'm sure she'll fall behind in other developments and again progress fwd.

DD2, 7 mo, we'll occasionally babble but mostly does a dinosaur roar.  She doesn't crawl yet and I'm not worried at all.

  • OP, are you sure you're describing your kid and not mine? :) DS has rolled before, but the first time he rolled back front back front until he ran into a "roadblock" was yesterday. He sits very well on his own but needs help to get to sitting. He stands with support or while holding something and I've never seen him pull up (but according to my dad and DH, he's pulled up twice). Babbling stopped months ago with the discovery of the raspberry. Now the raspberry is gone but the consonants aren't back. I'm not worried. I think DS is more interested in exploring what he can now. He's very good with his hands. Once he's bored with things nearby he'll try to get the more interesting things further away. He'll be more verbal when he feels the need.
  • My DS (now 8.5. months) wasn't interested in being mobile whatsoever until around 7.5 months. He started pulling himself with his arms (belly flat on floor) and did sort of an army crawl, but then started getting on all fours and rocking.  Then, quickly after that, he started full out crawling.  I was worried too because we know other babies that started doing things much younger.  But, I wouldn't worry about it yet.  I'm sure you LO will start doing things when he is ready.  I know it is easier said than done (not to worry), but it will eventually happen. :)

  • My DD can roll, but doesn't really do so (unless it's an accident).  My pedi told me not to worry about that if she can sit up because sitting is a more complex skill.  DD has just started army crawling, but prefers to pull herself up and walk while holding our hands instead of crawling.  I suspect she'll skip crawling or not do so for very long.  As far as the babbling goes, that seems to come and go for my DD as well.  She's currently blowing raspberries a lot (which an important part of language development), but some days she babbles more.  Your LO sounds a lot like my DD.  I'd say count your blessings that he doesn't want to crawl yet.  He will soon enough and then you'll wish you could put him down with some toys and he would stay put.
  • I think babies are just so different in learning their skills. I posted a few weeks ago about being worried DS has no interest in sitting. None. He also won't pull himself up, has no interest in standing (will actually buckle his legs to get back on the floor etc...)

But, he is rolling like crazy. He will not stay still. If we practice sitting, he tries to grab his feet, me, the floor, etc, arch his back and try to get moving again. He gets up on all fours, rocks and kind of bunny hops across the floor. He has always been a mover.

But how I wish he would sit still sometimes! Or try to pull himself up. Or sit up straight.

As for the babbling, he has been babbling for a long time and then stopped about a month ago and just did raspberries for weeks. Then everything stopped. He just started babbling again last week, like he "remembered" he could do it. But now, he babbles "Bababa"  "Mum mum mum" etc. so his babbles are more clear.

I wouldn't worry at all. I think every baby is on their own pace. I keep reminding myself that when I wonder why mine won't sit still! Big Smile

  • thank you so much for letting me know ds is perfectly normal.  It is so hard sometimes when with a competitive mommy group with younger babies that do more then ds.  I do enjoy that ehen i put him down he stays in one place.  Makes it easy for me to get things done while he plays.  Maybe he will move when he sees all his Christmas presents?!?

  • I just wanted to say that my DD is very similar. She can roll, but often won't unless she's rolling onto her tummy to sleep at night. And then she won't really roll back to her back. She sits in one place and plays with her toys. I've recently started enticing her to move by putting coveted "toys" out of her reach (cell phone, remote control) and she's just starting to try and move from a seated position to her hands and knees but more often than not she falls on her face. Sad She's the only baby not crawling at her daycare but I'm not worried. She'll move when she's ready. She's also really good with her hands so I think she just is more fascinated with picking up things and playing with them and realizes she'll be limited once she gets on her hands and knees. Don't worry!
