Eczema lotion/soap

I'm pretty sure DD has eczema.  However, we usually use California Baby and stuff like that for the bath.  Honestly I never really used lotion on either of the kids b/c they didn't have dry skin until now with DD.  I keep on seeing Aveeno suggested, but I feel like I was avoiding Aveeno for a reason in the first place.  Any recommendations for lotions/bath soap/shampoo that use less chemicals?  Thoughts on Aquaphor?

Re: Eczema lotion/soap

  • We use coconut oil on DS when it's winter. I slather it on after his bath or anytime he's itchy. I've also found giving him fish oil (the liquid stuff) helps to lessen his flares. When it gets really bad, we use Calmoseptine (or steroid cream).

This exactly!  I also have found with DD1 that her eczema cleared up totally in the summer, but just came back a month or so ago.  Our winters are VERY dry here on the prairies.....

  • My LO has Eczema on her legs and the crease between her legs and feet. I use Aveeno oatmeal bath in her bath and use Aveeno lotion. Aveeno has a complete baby line and even stuff specifically for Eczema, it's expensive but works! I love it and highly recommend it. I also use Aquaphor lotion too which is also expensive. It's like $18.00 for the tub but I also use it as diaper rash cream and it works wonders!!!

  • I honestly don't know what is in Aveeno, but I always thought there were way too many chemicals for my liking.  I haven't looked at the product line for almost 3 years though, has it changed?  It seems like people like it, so I would totally go for it if the chemicals aren't there.

They're definitely not great.  The EWG rates their baby eczema cream as a 3 (moderate hazard) and they're owned by Johnson & Johnson.

I've heard great things about these homemade eczema bars but haven't had the chance to make them myself yet: https://blog.designedlykristi.com/?p=870

I have eczema, and the only thing that has ever truly cleared it up is adding carrot seed oil to regular, unscented lotion (I'm a big fan of Burt's Bees). I generally avoid fragrances in all products when having a flare.

  • DD1 has eczema and we just recently found (through a freiend) a lotion that we LOVE. It is a bit pricey but worth it. It is called Renew and it works really well. We use regular baby soaps but this lotion after and you can feel how much nicer it is on the skin.

  • DS has eczema and I use a bar of soap I found at target, I didn't even know about this brand, it's SheaMoisture organic raw shea butter baby eczema, part of their Baby line. I love it! I also use California Baby Calendula Cream when there is a flare up and their Supersensitive lotion for every day.

I would avoid aveeno, I don't feel comfortable with a product unless is natural and/or organic.

I also avoid any type of synthetic fragrances. I don't use perfumes and I ask the people LO comes in contact with the most to avoid perfumes. I can tell someone is wearing it because if they hug DS his face will start to react!

With the products I mentioned we have it under control!
