DS only eats a few bites of food a day. We only try once or twice because it's no use. We've tried almost all stage one foods and rice and oatmeal. Sometimes we mix oatmeal into fruit to change the texture to see if he likes it better. I feel like he sshould be eating a lot more solids by now. He will either close his lips or spit it out. What and how much does your LO eat? Any tips?

Re: What and how much solids is your 7-8 month eating?
He is 6.5 months old and has had peas, avocado, squash, sweet potato, apple, pomegranate, grape, peach, mango, strawberry, banana, raspberry, pineapple, oatmeal and wheat cereal.
Some suggestions for introducing more foods: applesauce mixtures. I have bought apple-pomegranate, apple-peach-mango, apple-grape, apple-blueberry and apple-berry no added sugar applesauces. He also likes the mesh-feeder and because he is teething sometimes I give him a frozen chunk of mango or a frozen strawberry to chew on. Also, if you make your own baby food you can do a lot more mixes. Raspberries were on sale so we bought a couple pints and I mixed them with a banana or some pineapple. I also mix them with frozen strawberries. I just throw it in the blender with some water.
My nurse practitioner thinks Xander is very hungry because he is still nursing about 12x a day so he wants me feeding Xander 4x a day. He gets about 3tbsp cereal (mixed with fruit for the wheat because he doesn't like it by itself) for breakfast, 3-4 tbsp of a veggie for lunch, 3-4 tbsp of a fruit for supper and then about 2tbsp cereal before bed.
I try not to force him to eat but sometimes I will make him laugh or smile big and stick the spoon in quickly.
To the PP's - I thought berries were on the not before one list. . . (because they are more likely to cause an allergic reaction).
OP - My DD loves her solid foods, but I make them. I don't know if that has any bearing on her love of food or not, but if you wish to try making your own and see if it's any better it's really quite simple. I would start with sweet potatoes or something that most babies like. I bake mine until they are very soft. I have a Baby Bullet, but any food processor will do. Just puree your sweet potato with some formula or BM until it is the proper consistency. The other thing you may want to try is making some small chunks and allowing your LO to try feeding himself. Perhaps he doesn't like pureed foods. . .
My LO eats about 6-8 ounces of solid foods daily. She has had and likes: rice, oatmeal, sweet potato, peaches, mango, acorn squash (LOVES this), pumpkin, cherries, pears, blueberries, avocado (doesn't care for these), apples, green beans, peas (constipate her), yellow squash/zuchinni and chicken.
Don't stress too much about solids at this point. Up until 1 year of age, BM or formula should provide the nutrition your LO needs.
The AAP's website says nothing about delaying berries due to allergies. It lists the following as common allergens:
-
Cow milk
-
Eggs
-
Peanuts
-
Soy
-
Wheat
-
Nuts from trees (such as walnuts, pistachios, pecans, cashews)
-
Fish (such as tuna, salmon, cod)
-
Shellfish (such as shrimp, lobster)
-
Peanuts, nuts, and seafood are the most common causes
of severe reactions. Allergies also occur to other foods such as meats,
fruits, vegetables, grains, and seeds such as sesame.
I think that i an older recommendation that is kind of controversial right now. Studies are finding delaying the foods may be increasing allergies. Israel has one of the lowest peanut allergy rates and the use it as a weaning food.My nurse practioner has told me to delays eggs, milk, and peanuts until my child is 1 but I will do more research before I decide. Thanks for the link and info. Solid foods really are a confusing thing to navigate.
I have read that your not supposed to introduce citrus fruits until a yr old. It is too hard on their stomach.
You are describing DS1--he hated solids! He wouldn't do most of the baby foods and he did the same thing--close mouth, spit it out, and he would cry too! Mealtimes were so stressful. He really didn't start getting into food until about 10mos old and at that point, it was mostly table food. I was so stressed about it at first but then decided he'd show me when he was ready. So we tried everyday but if he was refusing, we just stopped and moved on. I would say he got the vast majority of his calories from breastmilk until he was about 12 or 13 months. He wasn't fully transitioned to cow's milk until 14 or 15 mos.
DS2 has been completely different. He loves food and is eating really well and boy what a difference that makes--so much less stress at mealtimes.
All that to say, don't worry about it. Keep trying and when he's receptive, go for it, but if he's not just stop and move on to other things.
Also, just in case you are wondering, DS1 is a good eater now--so refusing solids, etc. was not predictive of picky eating or anything. GL!
So glad to hear this, thank you!
