2nd time moms

2nd time moms how often did you change your newborns diapers at night? Did you wake them if they slept through the night? If they were breastfed ( I read they go a bit more) how often did you change them?

Im going to be a ftm and I need all the advice/info I can get, so I was reading some moms wont wake their little ones if they are already sleeping through the night even at a early age to change their diapers. I know as a ftm Im probably going to be cautious about every little thing.

Re: 2nd time moms

  • I know I changed Drew every time he woke for a feeding.  I would change his diaper to wake him up a little more then feed him.  After he started sleeping through the night, about 7 weeks, I did not wake him up.  I remember my pedi saying once they are over a certain weight then it was okay not to wake him.  I think I changed him 3 times a night, basically every three hours.

Breastfed babies are definately little poop machines, but it really is not that bad.  I had a basinett next to my bed, and when he woke up, I would just sit up grab the diaper and wipe and the changing pad from under the basinett and change him, I go to the point where I could get him fed and be back in bed in about 20 minutes.

  • I changed her with every feed.  I woke her until she reached her birth weight and then let her sleep for as long as she wanted.  From that time (about a week & a half) she slept for 5 hours a night.  As long as your baby is gaining weight I wouldn't worry about waking them to change a diaper.  As far as breastfed babies pooping more - that isn't always the case!  Breastfed babies don't always poop on schedule and can go for days without pooping!  My mom always said that my sister would poop once a week - Sunday mornings right before church and it was always the explosive kind.  Basically, just change them when their diaper is dirty and don't worry about making it too much of a big deal!

  • I changed DS at every feeding. If I had noticed that he pooped between feedings, I would have changed that too, but since we were both sleeping, it wasn't usually noticed until the next feeding anyways. He fed often enough that it was still a change every few hours.
  • I would follow baby's schedule. I never woke up either baby when they slept. They always woke up after 2-3 hours to eat and that is when I would change them. My son was through the night at 6 weeks and I so did not disturb him. If he slept through on his own, he was comfortable :)
  • If DS woke up at night to feed, I'd also change him. I am a big believer in "never wake a sleeping baby" (once they've regained birthweight, of course). I would never change DS while he was sleeping...although he was up every 2-3 hours anyway.

  • If I remember correctly, we only changed DS when he woke up for a feeding.  He started sleeping through the night at 3 months and we wouldn't have dared wake him up to change him.  =P

  • Newborns don't generally sleep through the night, but I changed him every time I got up to feed him generally, and as he slept longer stretches, I changed him less often.  Once he was sleeping in good, solid stretches, I switched him to overnight diapers and stopped changing him at night.

  • My pedi said always feed on demand so I never woke my DS up to eat, even as a newborn (I never worried either since he woke up every 2-3 hours anyway).  I also changed his diaper AFTER he was fed in the night since he always pooped during feedings.

  • I changed DS every time he woke for a feeding.

I BFed - and DS was up every 2-3 hours for a while.  As he got older, I was lucky to get a 4 hour then 5 hour stretch.  I was never concerned about changing his diaper when he slept.

  • I changed her whenever it seemed full - usually after every feeding.

I did not wake her to eat. I fed on demand.

She was breastfed, I don't remember how often she was changed. I just would do it whenever it was full/dirty!

  • DD nursed to sleep quite a bit, so basically I would change her right before each feeding.  It worked out to every 2-3 hours or so I would say.  Occasionally she would poop during the feeding and then I would have to change her again and finish the feeding.  But the other reason that made it work out well is that getting her changed would wake her up real good so that she would nurse well and not do lazy sucking.

I never ever ever woke her when she was asleep.  I was busy sleeping too :)

ETA- the only reason I would consider waking this baby at night would be if he wasn't gaining weight well or something and it was important to nurse more frequently.

  • I just changed her when she woke for a feeding.  It was about every 2 hours in the beginning.

  • I only changed her when she woke up for a feeding unless it was a really smelly poopy.  DD had sensitive skin so I didn't want a poopy diaper sitting on her skin if I knew it was there. But if i was sleeping how would I know?

I never work her to change a diaper (again, unless it was poop).  She didn't STTN until after her 1st bday.

  • I didn't have a changing schedule per se, but I did change her when she woke each time and with each feeding.  She was BF (not sure if it has ANYTHING to do with it), but those were just the times she needed changing!  I always checked her and changed her when she woke and it seemed like she would need a changing about 1/2 hour after each feeding.  I went through a TON of diapers with her in the first three months...  Probably about 20 a day during the early newborn stage.

  • only if he pooped or was all the way awake. if he was sleepy or dreamfeeding or fell asleep... I'd wait it out if possible. Of course it was case-by-case so if the diaper was full of pee, I'd change it. but certainly not every time.
