Breastfeeding

First bottle

So tomorrow we are going to try our first bottle. My DD is 4 weeks old, I am worried because she hates the paci, won't even allow it to go in her mouth. I have playtex drop in for my first daughter and some medela nipple/bottles that I got with my pump. I was wondering what bottles everyone else uses if they had a child that would flat out refuse to have anything but skin in their mouth.

Someone suggested latex, but I am allergic so I am not to thrilled with the idea of having it in the house.

Re: First bottle

  • I use Tommy tippee bottles. I gave LO his first bottle around 5 weeks and he took it with some encouragement. I say "suck suck suck" and make little sucking mouth movements and he watches and repeats. He caught on good with that and that's how I get him to take nuk pacis too. We do a few bottles a week no problem.

  • We use Playtex Ventaire Advanced bottles with the wide / slow flow nipple.  LO seems fine with them.  It took a little coaxing and crying (for DD) at first, but DH got her to take it and now she's a bottle champ!  (And still eats from the breast fine too!)  She wouldn't take a paci at first either, but now she will.

  • We used the Breastflow bottles with DS, and that is what I plan to use with our new LO this spring. The sucking motion seemed to be the closer to breastfeeding than some other bottles, and DS never had a problem going back and forth between bottle and breast.
