3rd Trimester

what do I do? TMI boobies

My colostrum came in a month ago and I had leaks so I have had to wear pads, well it makes my nipples all clogged with yellowish crap that is itchy and uncomfortable. Showering doesn't unclog it and I don't want to pick at it too much since that will toughen my nipples and make it harder to breastfeed right? So what the hell do I do?

  • I usually just squeeze a little and it comes out. Like popping a pimple..I guess is what I would compare it to.

This.  And I do it in the shower... I feel like the hot/warm water helps loosen it up.

  • I take a little bit of body wash on a wash cloth and gently scrub. That seems to do the trick. I wouldn't worry about your nipples getting too tough if you are being gentle. I would think an infection due to clogged ducts would be more of a concern.
  • I don't think picking at it will make it harder to breastfeed.

This.  Running it under hot water in the shower helps too.  You do want to make sure you're not playing with it too much though as nipple stimulation can cause contractions.  Some colostrum crusting won't hurt anything.  In fact, colostrum is excellent for keeping your nipples moisturized, especially in this cold winter air.
