Dentist appt, WWYD?

I was supposed to get my teeth cleaned next week, but I cancelled. I am 99% sure I had xrays 6 mos ago, but not 100%.

My step mom cleans my teeth, and she always asks if anything changed medically or if I was pregnant. I don't plan on telling anyone yet, and she can't be the first to know. So, I am hoping to get in on the same day as my OB appt closer to 8/9 weeks. I know dental health is very important in pregnancy, so wwyd?

Go and just not tell her since I am almost certain no xrays will be taken? Are there any other risks or reasons she needs to know? My fear is something will come up during the exam and the dds will want a quick xray.

I plan on sharing after the 1st u/s, so not too far off....I just hate not using the last cleaning of the year with insurance! lol

Re: Dentist appt, WWYD?

  • As long as your not getting x rays ... I'd go. And if something came up in the exam just say you pretty sure your not pregnant but don't want to take the chance. There isn't 'really' anything medically they need to know about your pregnancy for just a cleaning. I mean .. pregnancy can cause gingivitis because of hormone changes... But that really isn't something the hyg/doc need to know if ya know what I mean. Now for anything more than a cleaning ... You would have to tell because it changes the type of anesthetic and when the dentist would time procedures ie 2nd trimester. Plenty of people get cleanings that early on in their pregnancy and have no idea they are even pregnant yet!

  • Call ur dental insurance. They can tell u ur last x rays. I am still in pain from my filling gone bad 6 months ago. I did end up getting an x ray, both the dentist and OB cleared it since it is localized on ur mouth and they double vested me. But that was to see about a root canal. No one cared that I declined the normal yearly x ray.  I was even cleared for the novocaine and all that.  So the cleaning should be completely fine.

  • I'd postpone the appt if possible. I bet you won't be able to lie to your stepmom if you go..Not because there are risks (I actually have had dental xrays while pregnant a few times...I think with natalie I was still in the first tri (just barely, like 12ish weeks).. just because she will ask and then you'd have to lie

  • Oh, and while you are on the phone with the dental insurance - ask them if they cover additional cleanings while pregnant.  I just found out mine covers up to 2 extra cleanings while pregnant.  So I am cramming one in on the 21st just to get it in.  Maybe if they do, that will make you feel better about "losing" one this year.
  • Your gums can be more sensitive and bleed more during pregnancy, I'm not sure if that makes any kind of difference.

But like you said too, what if they see something and want to do an xray, then you're going to be in a predicament.

  • Personally, if it were me, I would wait.

#1 because I wouldn't want to risk putting myself in a position where I might possibly have to lie... I am a terrible liar.

and #2 because the thought of anyone putting their fingers in or near my mouth makes me start to gag already.  I am going to have to wait until the m/s subsides to go for a cleaning.  Puking on the dentist or hygenist would not be awesome.
