tub bath RIGHT after umbilical cord falls off????

Can we give LO an official tub bath right when it falls off? She still has like the little yellowish stuff, looks like still healing on the inside. How long did you wait/are you waiting to give LO a "tub bath" after umbilical cord fell off?????????????

Re: tub bath RIGHT after umbilical cord falls off????

  • I kept cleaning his belly button with alcohol q-tips for another week. Then I started bath time with just water and drying belly button with q-tips to make sure it stayed dry for the rest of the time. We didnt start soap every othe bath until 6 weeks. Hope this helps.

  • When our LO's cord came off, I gave him a tub bath the next day assuming it would be fine. We also had an appointment with the Pedi that day, and she advised us no tub baths yet. It turns out that even though the cord came off he still had a small opening that was not completely healed. Therefore I recommend waiting another week to help ensure the site has healed, or waiting till your Pedi advises.

  • It needs to be completely dry first. That can take a little while.

  • We got the green light to give tub baths from day one, that recommendation changed about 9 months ago. We just made sure not to put soap on it. We were also clearly told not to use rubbing alcohol.

You can use a wet q-tip to help clean up some of the leftover crust. But it will fall off.

  • We waited about 5 days.  He still had some yellow goop also right after his fell off, so we waited until that was completely gone.

  • They gave lo a tub bath in the hospital when she was less than 24 hours old. She had her second tub bath yEsterday at 3 days old. This is normal where I'm living, mo one says to wait. Just have to dry it off

  • LO lost his stump on Monday and our pedi said no tub baths until everything is cleared out of his belly button.

  • At our hospital they give tub baths BEFORE the cord has fallen off even.  They showed us in the hospital tour with DD and then in the class told us that new research had shown that it did NOT cause problems.  DD started getting tub baths 2 nights after coming home from the hospital.
