5 1/2 weeks and no yolk sac yet?

I went to the doctor today and they did an ultrasound.  I should be around 5 1/2 weeks but she couldn't find a yolk sac- just a gestational sac.  Has anyone else had this experience or know anything about this??

I believe that anything before 6 weeks is too early to see anything. My first u/s was at 6 weeks exactly and my doctor warned me that we might not see anything because it was so early.

Don't worry quite yet.  Like PP said, it's early to "expect" to see much of anything.  It's great there was a gestational sac... just wait til the next u/s and go from there.  If your doctor isn't concerned then you shouldn't be yet.  GL!

I'm lurking too, and agree fully! I had an u/s at 6 weeks and didn't see anything. I had another at 7w2d and saw the yolk sac and fetal pole/hb! It's amazing how fast they grow, but no, you shouldn't be worried that you haven't seen anything, it is really early.

I was talking about going in for an early ultrasound because of my left lower dull pain (which they said is probably normal) and they said there would only be a gestational sac.  Give it a week or so!

I agree.  It's still really early.  What type of u/s did you have?  I went in at 5 1/2 weeks too because of some spotting, and when they did the regular u/s all we could see was a gestational sac.  She then tried a transvaginal u/s and we were able to see the very beginnings of a yolk sac.  I wouldn't worry too much about it. At that stage even a couple days can make a huge difference.

Thank you everyone!!!  I feel much better after hearing from everyone.  I go for another u/s next week- I'll keep everyone posted!

I went at what would have been around 5 weeks according to my LMP, but of course dates are not always super accurate according to when fertilization occurs, etc.  We did not see anything yet.  I go on Monday for another ultrasound.  This will be 2 weeks  later.  It is funny, i have no reason to be nervous but I am!  But, it is normal to not see anything at 5 weeks.  I am like you I guess!  Everything happens so fast between 5-7 weeks!  My doctor gave me no reason to be concerned and reason to think we would not be developing right on schedule even though there was nothing at 5 weeks.

I don't know why they do ultrasounds so early, all it seems to do is worry people because there's nothing much to see

Try not to worry...I had my first ultrasound at 6 weeks and there was no yolk sac and baby had a really low heart rate. My doctor monitored my HCG levels for a few weeks and at my next ultrasound, all was fine! The yolk sac developed at some point after my first ultrasound. Don't stress too much over it!!

Same thing happened to me around that time.  No yolk, no fetal pole, no h/b.  They had me come back 2 weeks later and all was well.  It's amazing how fast they develop in the beginning.

Did you have a vaginal u/s done? I had one today, thought I was 7 weeks, but am only 4 weeks 3 days and the tech saw a yolk sac.

I wouldn't worry too much, I know it's easier said than done!

I went in at what I thought was 6 w6d going off my lmp, and there was a yolk sac but no fetal pole or hb.  She told me I was probably around 5w3d and to come back in a few weeks for  another u/s.  I go back on the 22nd....planning on seeing hb then...fingers crossed and gl.
