Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is 102.5 a normal temp for teething?

I called his pediatrician yesterday, and they told me not to worry until his temp is around 105. Now, am I weird for thinking this is crazy? I thought a temp that high was really dangerous... Anyway, consistently for the past two days his temp has been 102- 102.5.

I've given him tylenol and alternated with motrin every three hours like the doctor suggested. But do you think 102.5 is too high to be associated with teething? He has no other symptoms except being very clingy, and very cranky. And he is usually the complete opposite of cranky. I looked and felt and don't see any signs of any more teeth. His first two teeth came in without any problems at all, no fever, no crankiness, nothing.

So tell me if you think this is associated with teething! Thanks!

  • It's dangerous if it gets that high and won't come down. DS' temp got to 105 once while teething and we were told (on our way to the ER) not to go to the hospital unless it's that high and we've tried tylenol, ibuprophen, and a tepid bath with none of it working. That being said, you know your gut, you're the mom, if you don't feel comfortable with his temp, take him in. If nothing is wrong, then it will at least ease your mind.

  • I'd say that it's too high for teething 100 maybe but 102?  Definitely, try to get it down with meds...if you can't take in.  But bottomline, go with your gut

  • My peditrician says if they are over 3 months then 103 degress is when they want them to come in so you are right around there. I thought that the idea that teething could cause a fever was just an old wives tale? How is he responding to the medicine, is it bringing it down? I don't think it ever hurts to call and talk with them if you feel concern.

  • A fever is usually a symptom of an infection. The infection is the problem, not the fever. If the LO has a runny nose or other symptoms that lead you believe it's a virus, then I'd wait it out and make the decision whether to bring her in based on her behavior. Since you're not seeing other symptoms, I'd probably call the doc after a couple days to see if they want to see her. If you call and say "OMG, my LO has a fever", they will give the standard fever speech. If you call and say "my LO has had a fever for X days with no other symptoms, at what point do I bring her in?", you might get a better answer.

  • I was told any fever to bring LO in. Also that they should not be getting a fever while teething unless there's a infection.

  • That is too high for teething, but not high enough to see the doctor unless its.continues to climd even with meds or it last longer than 3 days.

  • This sounds like my son over the weekend... ended up being a double ear infection.  I agree that 102.5 is too high for teething.  I would take him in to get checked out.
