TTC after a C section

Hello Ladies-

Just a quick question if anyone has delivered then gotten pregnant again how long did you wait to conceive again? I am now at 10 weeks PP  and we are hoping to try again as soon as we can since my DD was born still on 9/30/11.

TIA- Heather

Re: TTC after a C section

  • I am so very sorry for your loss.

I was told a year, BUT I know many people that were told much less than that and I know many people who have TTC and had RCS without waiting that long. Have you asked your doctor what they suggest?

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

We weren't given any restrictions on time. We "pulled the goalie" aka stopped protecting around 8-9 months after our son was born via c/s. We started actively TTC at a year and got pregnant at a year and a half. So about 10 months without protection until we got pregnant. I have PCOS so we didn't expect to get pregnant right away.

  •  I am so sorry for the loss of your daughter.

I know it varies from doc to doc, but on average they like to see about 18 months between births.  However, I recently read that the uterus is completely healed a lot sooner than previously though.  I'll try to track down the study since it was from a reputable source and not just some willy nilly study.

  • I got pg 6 months after ds1 was born. My doctor prefers women to wait a year but he has plenty of c/s patients that dont wait. If you want a vbac they recommend you wait 2 years after your c/s.

    Sorry for your loss! HUGS!

  • My MFM told me to wait 3 months since i will be 39 in march and it took me sometime to get pregnant before. I am not thinking it will happen fast for us. Thank you for the advice and information.

  • My OB gave me the green light to start TTC after my 6 week checkup. I didnt start TTC right then, but did get pregnant when my son was 4 months old. I could have went for a VBAC, but I didnt go into labor on my own and my doctor would not induce.

    So sorry for your loss.

  • My OB is head of OB at the hospital and I trust her with my life. She said 1 year between deliveries for a rcs and 18 for a vbac. Many OBs are much more conservative, but she said there is no reason to wait a year before starting to try if everything was fine the 1st time (and you have no weird circumstances). DS took 3 years to conceive and she knew we didn't want to wait.

  • First, I wanted to say I am so sorry for your loss. As for ttc again, my dr never gave me any type of timeline or restrictions. I started ttc#2 when my ds turned 8 months.

  • I'm so very sorry for your loss.  The standard that I hear people talk about is that you want 12 months to let your body fully recover.  However, shortly after my DS was born we were talking about that in my BF group that is run by an L&D nurse from my hospital and she said not many OB's  go by that anymore with how efficient c/s's have become and that she sees plenty of patients already having the next baby around the 12 month mark with their OB's blessings.

  • So sorry for your loss. My OB doesn't give any stringent restrictions on TTC after a C-section. A friend of mine had a VBAC 13 months after the birth of her first and it was just fine, but I know many OBs are much more conservative. I would follow your OBs guidelines of 3 months, and in the meantime make sure you are taking your prenatals and maybe some extra folic acid, vitamin D, and Omega 3s. I hope you are able to conceive again soon and get your rainbow baby. :hugs:

  • I was told I could start trying again at 6 week pp visit.  And that if I got pregnant, he would let me try for a vaginal birth. Good luck to you!!

  • We waited 4 months. Make sure to give yourself some time to really grieve. You may already be there, but I know at that point I was still on the try again don't try again roller coaster

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

After mine I was told to wait about a year - that was by two different OBs (one for each c/s).

I waited about 15 months after DD1 to start trying again. And we waited until about 20 months after DD2 to start trying again.  We could have tried sooner, but family situations delayed us.

  • So sorry for your loss.  We conceived after an emergency c-section 3 months post partum.  My doctors are not at all concerned with how close the surgeries will be as everything healed properly.  I am not a candidate for VBAC because of my pubic bone, not because of the closeness of pregnancies.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.

My doctor told me to wait 6 months afterward to start trying.
