Thoughts on the name Emmeline?

Pronounced EM-?-leen

Emmeline is female given name. The medieval name, a short form of Germanic names beginning with the element amal meaning "work". It was introduced to England by the Normans.

 Emmeline has been worn by a number of figures, including:

  • Charlotte Turner Smith chose the name for the heroine of 1788 novel Emmeline, The Orphan of the Castle.  Despite defying tradition, the heroine ends well;
  • Emmeline Lott penned The English Governess in Egypt: Harem Life in Egypt and Constantinople, a true account of her service in the household of a nineteenth century Egyptian viceroy;
  • British suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst was an early leader and played a key role in winning Englishwomen the right to vote;
  • Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence was part of the same movement;
  • Emmeline Wells was equally active in the suffragette movement in the US, even running for the Utah state senate;
  • JK Rowling used the name for a minor character in the Harry Potter series ? Emmeline Vance, a member of the Order of the Phoenix;
  • A 20th century novel about a nineteenth-century girl called Emmeline has inspired a modern opera.  But, as befits the medium, this Emmeline dies tragically.

The name was fairly common right up through the early 20th century, though all of the spellings were in moderate use ? meaning the names failed to make an impact in the statistics, though several variants charted a few times.

Emmeline is different without being truly distinctive.  While her antique vibe will appeal to many, Em-  names are simply too popular for your daughter?s unusual appellation to stand out.

  • I love the name- it's very pretty.  Just a warning- you might get people who pronounce it wrong.  When I saw the title of your post I wondered if it would be Emma-line, Emma-leen, or Emma-lynn.
  • Love love love it. It was our #1 name for a while but now I think we're going with another choice. I was going to pronounce it Emma-LINE and the PP is correct- you will get a lot of mispronunciations.

  • I don't like the sound of "Emma" and adding the -line really makes it bad for me. It's a nice enough name, I've seen it on the boards more than a few times, it' just not my style. Plus the leen vs line issue.

    This.  I don't love the name.  Don't hate it, but definitely NMS.  Your child would have to live her whole life correcting spelling and pronunciation.

    I disagree. I know a little Emmeline and her mom says that very few people mispronounce it, just old people in line at Target.

    LOVE THE NAME!

  • Makes me think of Army Wives. The character's version is pronounced emma-lynn. A very pretty name...just makes me think of all the Emily's and Emma's.
