Moms 2+: Developmental differences

So, I've already committed the sin of comparing my kids. After going back through Geneva's baby book, I've realized she was a rockstar concerning her milestones. DS, on the other hand, seems to be taking his sweet time with things. He seems to be about 2-3 weeks behind on where Geneva was. Pedi says he's meeting his milestones, but I hate it that Cecil's nowhere near as smiley as Geneva was. He's pretty stingy with the grins. He did bust out with some major cooing on Tuesday, so that's pretty cute...

Did your kids trend the same or differ greatly? If you saw a difference, what kind of difference did you see?

I'm also wondering how much a difference gender is making on things.

  • Totally different! For example, Bailey crawled and cruised around the furniture at 6 months then walked at 8 1/2 months. Bryce crawled at 8 months, cruised at 10 months and just started walking in the last few weeks (13 1/2 months). Bryce has done everything behind what Bailey did and he's about half the size Bailey was at any given age. Bailey was a HUGE baby and is still a big boy. Bryce is hanging out on the 30%tile. I know it's really hard to not compare and I've had to many times step back and realize that they are two different people. Even in their personalities they are totally different.

  • All three of mine are completely different from each other, and it started in the womb even.  Like Riley was CRAZY active in my belly and he has been since he popped out.  Riley sat up and crawled and walked earlier than Finn did, by like a month or two.  Kellen army crawled starting at 5 months and niether of the older boys army crawled at all.  Finn talked waaaaaay earlier than Riley did.  Finn also was a much better table food eater than Riley was.  Its OK to compare, lord knows I go back through the blog all the time to see when the bigs started doing things (because I can't remember crap!)!

  • My two pretty much hit their milestones around the same time.  Jack was a slightly quicker walker than Ethan and Ethan was about 6 months faster in potty training.  The biggest difference is that Jack was talking like an adult by age 1 and Ethan really didn't begin talking until he was a little over age 2.  Other than that, they have pretty much been dead-on with milestones (smiling, sitting up, crawling, etc, etc.).  The biggest difference between my two is that Ethan is a very independent go-getter.  The child knows no speed but fast.  Jack, is on the lazier side and would prefer for you to do everything for him; he's very laid back and takes his time.

  • Yep, totally different. Grant walked, talked, was able to say ABC's/colors/numbers much earlier than Reid...and yes we compared them all the time. Reid on the other hand has much better hand-eye coordination and is much better at physical things like climbing, hitting a ball, etc....Size wise they are also different, Grant is 5, weighs 39lbs, is 43 in tall and wears a 5 slim pants. Reid is 3, weighs 35lbs, is 40 in tall and wears a size 5 pants....Totally different!

  • I can tell a huge difference between Hailey and Avery already.  A is hitting her milestones way earlier than H did and they have completely different personalities and act different. Things that H loved when she was a baby, A hates. It's actually quite amusing to me. A is smaller than H for both height and weight. Totally different babies. I can't wait to see how things progress as they get older.  Yep, we compare all the time - I can't help it!

  • I compare all the time.  On some things, Sophie has been way ahead of Gavin.  On others they are just about the same.  I chalk most of it up to girl/boy.  Sophie crawled, Gavin never did.  Sophie talked earlier but just like Gavin, she has slowed down and doesn't say much anymore.  I'm curious if she will also have a speech delay eventually?  She took her first steps way earlier than he did (like 9 mos) but didn't really take off walking until last week- 6 days before her birthday.  Gavin took off 5 days before his birthday but those were his real first steps.  The size thing has been the biggest difference though.  Both started off long and skinny.  Gavin got REALLY chunky around 6 mos but Sophie never did.  She's pretty tall but still very petite.  Behavior wise, Sophie is SUPER aware of everything.  She was like that the first day in the hospital- noticed every person that came into the room.  She watches us carefully and mimics us.  For example- she doesn't just pull her shoes off... she knows to undo the velcro and THEN pull the shoe off.  Gavin has always been in his own little world.  Oh and he would sit and play alone happily for hours... this little girl wants constant interaction and has a very short attention span.  But in the looks department- they could be twins.  Seriously... Sophie's pictures are so similar to Gavin's at this age, it is scary.  I need to do some side by sides to demonstrate...

  • Both of my boys are complete opposites pretty much. Derek was a happy go lucky easy baby that gave me baby fever so soon after because he was so easy! He hit milestones early and has always been a string bean. Parker on the other hand was colicky until 3 months, very stingy with smiles, and has taken his time with milestones. They haven't been much behind what Derek's were and not anything to worry about, just different than Derek's. He's 8 months now and where Derek was trying his hardest to crawl at this point, Parker could care less. He rolls or army scoots his way around just fine. He is standing up and staying up though now where Derek wasn't doing that yet. He's also a chunky monkey and was in the same size diaper as Derek at 4 months. He's always had to wear clothes about 6 months ahead of his age.

  • My kids are very different! Lila is bigger, a better eater, a better sleeper, and has hit all her milestones earlier.

  • My two are night and day! Cadence was a super serious baby. It was like pulling teeth to get her to smile until she was well over a year old. She is now the silliest thing ever, but she was so serious as a baby. Trevor is full of laughs, and smiles easily. It is nice to have some smiley baby pictures:)

Cadence rolled and sat up on her own at 5 months and crawled at 9 months. Trevor rolled at 4 months, sat up at 6 months and crawled at 7.5 months. Cadence seemed to hit physical milestones only when she could execute them perfectly and she was very cautious. Trevor on the other hand, will go for it, and falls, bumps his head, or otherwise hurts himself 4 million times a day. We purchased the SuperYard, which takes up our entire living room, for his well being.

So yes, we can't help but compare, and ours are very different!

  • My kids have been pretty different, and I definitely compare them all the time!  They all got their first teeth at 6 months, but pretty much all the developmental milestones have varied (sitting up, crawling, babbling, etc), with my oldest doing everything the latest, and my youngest has been done everything earliest so far.  Their personalities are SO different as well, I really think things like how smiley and easy-going they are is just inherent, and you can see that disposition in them from the get-go.

  • Mine are so different and I love it.  They have such different personalities and hit their milestones differently, too.  Isaac is behind P on most things like motor skills and talking but still in normal range.  Whether its a boy/girl thing or just an individual thing it doesn't matter to me.  If they weren't so different I might be bored!
  • I definitely see how my DDs develop differently since they are the same age.  They have hit some of the major milestones about the same time (within a couple weeks), but it varies who hits them first.  Plus I have one DD that is more verbal than the other, but not-as-verbal girl struck me as more advanced with the fine motor and problem solving skills.
