Pumping in Public

Tonight is my work's christmas party!  It will be my first time "pumping in public," i.e. in a washroom stall. I've pumped at other people's houses before but never "in public."

I bought a hand pump just in case my electric one ever broke and I've practiced with it before. I don't plan on doing a "full pump," just enough to relieve myself until I get home.

Any advice?

  • Can you pump in the car? I got the adaptor for $10

  • I agree with PP, I used to pump in the car all the time. I actually bought the Freestyle hands free pump just for that purpose. I would pump to and from work lol

  • You are so brave! I never pumped in public. I bowed out after three or four (if I was really pushing it) hours for things like that.
  • Ditto everyone else, pump in the car. Its a lot easier. Bring a nursing cover if you want to be more hidden. I've done that several times and I just hook everything up, put on the cover and play on my phone or read. Don't forget to bring a cooler for the pumped milk-I did that once and it was really sad.

    Good luck!

  • I don't have a car. Subway all the way! Big Smile

There are two other assistants and one lawyer who still pump at work, but I don't know them that well to start a conversation about.

I don't want to leave early. I am already getting there late at 5:00 when they leave the office to go to the restaurant (it starts at 4:00), and then the show at Second City ends around 10:00, which gets me home at 11:00. Hopefully if I don't get up the nerve to pump between dinner and dessert I won't explode before I get home.

    Wish me luck. Tongue Tied

Good luck!!!! We are public transit, too, not even a license :X Otherwise the car seems like the perfect gettaway. Pack extra breast pads just in case and wear something easy. AKA not a dress LOL

What kind of venue is it? A hotel or restaurant may have a back room you can use that would be more comfortable if you are comfortable asking about it.  I'd probably chicken out on the asking though, I get horribly awkward about asking people to make accommodations for me...

Otherwise, the washroom won't be the end of the world, especially if you just pump enough to get relief so you aren't stuck in there for too long. Let us know how it goes!

  • Ditto - if it's a hotel or restaurant I might just ask the manager if they have somewhere you could go. Maybe keep an eye on the other assistant or lawyer and see what they do? If they bring their pump bag with them you could use that as a way to approach them about it?

  • When I travelled for work I pumped in the airport bathroom stall. It wasn't bad I used my hands free bra and a handpump.  I was just doing for relief just did about 10 minutes. It worked fine.  I dumped the milk becuase I didn't want to deal with it - and I had a nice stash because I had over supply at the beginning.  It is not a big deal better to be comfortable.  Just take a big purse and some ziplock bags to store everything.

  • I've pumped at work in the locker room or conference room, but I work on night shift so there was really no one around.  However I was still a little nervous about it.  I have an Ameda Purely Yours that can use batteries if I can't plug it in.  I've also pumped many times in a moving vehicle using a hand pump.  I don't really have any advice though, you just do what you have to do sometimes Wink
  • I've pumped everywhere - I had three differnet kinds of nursing covers, if the bathroom has a handicap stall with a changing table I would use that stall. Its roomier and you can use the changing table to put all your stuff so you dont have to try and balance it all in your lap.  Its not that bad especially if you arent pumping multiple times there. Dont forget to bring your cold storage so you can take your milk home.
