1. In the post below you guys talked about putting LO on a public table or counter - why is this NOT acceptable to some?? LO's are getting so heavy!!!

2. Is it ok to put LO in a carseat with a coat on? I only did it once cause we were running errands and I had to keep taking him out of the car and it was a real PITA to keep taking it off and putting it back on. What do you all do? I hope people say they do it cause this will be a long winter if I have to put the coat on in the house, off when in the car, on when we are about to get out of the car, etc. etc.

    1. In the post below you guys talked about putting LO on a public table or counter - why is this NOT acceptable to some?? LO's are getting so heavy!!! I think this was topic on 9-12 at one point and some people were grossed out about putting a baby on a counter or table, when people eat off it. FTR, it doesnt bother me.  Shes not dirty, and i dont eat directly off a table. I dont chop meat on a bare counter either;. To each their own.

I hope people say they do it cause this will be a long winter if I have to put the coat on in the house, off when in the car, on when we are about to get out of the car, etc. etc.  I dont think huge coats are recomended- and for the life of me I cant exactly remember why...someone else chime in? For me, its getting cold here, so I have her in a thick sweat jacked or a coat that is not like a snow suit coat, not too much padding.  That way I can keep her straps at the length they should be, w/o adjusting them for when she wears bulky clothes. We arnt hanging around outside when its 30 degrees so im fine with it.

  • 1. I don't see anything wrong with putting my DD on a public table or counter. Usually if we are at a resturant she sits in a high chair anyway. If I see other moms doing it I don't even think twice. Like PP said, it's not like I eat directly off the table.

    2. I put a jacket on DD when I leave the house. It is not a bulky type jacket so I dont see any reason to take it off.

  • I think the heavy coat thing was because the straps aren't close enough to their body with the coat on. I'm basically saying I know it's dangerous but I'm looking for confirmation to do it anyway! Terrible!!

We have been using a fleece jacket that is pretty warm but the one day I did it when I knew it was a bad idea he had on a heavy down coat. I don't know how long the fleece will work though once it gets really cold. My H says just wrap him in a heavy blanket with a hat on so I don't have to try to take the coat off with him hanging half out of the car but I don't know that I like that idea any better.

  • 1. I think people make a big deal not about a "public" table or counter top, but that it's something they can fall from. You know they move so fast blah blah and could fall before you catch them. I never leave them there alone so I don't worry about it. But some people will give the old side eye :)

    2. Here's a link about winter coats and car seats.

    https://babyproducts.about.com/od/carseats/a/carseatcoat.htm

It's not linking for me. The gist is if you put on a big puffy coat you won't be able to get the straps tight enough against their chest. In the event of an accident the force will cause the puffy coat to flatten and allow room for the baby to get through the straps and be ejected. Hope that makes sense. They talk about how to see if you're strapping them in properly and fitting them right with a coat. Just google "babies with winter coats and car seats" (or copy/paste the link)

My solution is to bring a coat along if we'll be outside for a long time. Otherwise I just cover Em up with a thick blanket and then use that to wrap around her when I take her into the store. She always wears a hat too. Once they are bigger it's easier to get a good fit with the coat and straps, so Aiden always wears a coat, gloves and hat. Also though I don't carry him still, so he's walking in the elements alone, which makes all that fluff necessary to me.

Great link - thank you so much! My H has been fighting me about this telling me I'm ridiculous for not wanting him to wear the coat (other than that one time) and I just read it to him. It's not worth the risk. I'll save the heavy coat for out of the car, the fleece for inside the car. Thanks for reminding me of the importance of this!!
  • I don't think I have ever sat Coop on a public table but not because I think it's disgusting.  I just never even thought about it.  We don't have a kitchen table but we do have a large island/bar area and I sit him on it when I put his coat on.

I tend to take his coat off unless we go somewhere close.  He sweats a lot and gets really hot so keep a coat on him is a no no.  I'm pretty sure that is why he got sick one time.  FTR he does not wear a big bulky coat at the moment.
