Hi Everyone, I am now to the bump but I have a question. Last week I had my anatomy scan. The technician left the room while and came back with a dr, this is when I started to get nervous because they weren't telling me anything. Then the doctor looks at the u/s for a few minutes and then tells me to get dressed and come to her office. She then proceeds to tell me that my babies left lung has not closed properly. She said that me baby will be born with bronchopulmonary dysplasia. I am scared and nervous because I am not sure what will happen to my baby. Any words of advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Re: Newbie in need of advice.
My daughter developed BPD because she was so early (23w6d). She was on oxygen until 2 months adjusted age. Be prepared to have to keep the baby indoors during cold and flu season, and you may have to get Synagis shots for him/her.
It is scary to think about, but sometimes BPD becomes a mild form. Now at 4 and a half, my daughter requires an inhaler from time to time (especially when autumn and winter come in), but other than that, does not have severe issues.
Because you have time to prepare yourself, start checking into state and county medical assistance. The baby may qualify for early intervention, insurance help, medicaid, etc. The hospital social worker may be able to give you some info, especially a NICU social worker.
Edited--double post, won't let me delete
Thanks for your kind words everyone. I was just stunned when I got this news. I am going to see my dr. next week and I am also going to get another u/s. I have some questions written down now so I am just hoping for the best.
My son also developed BPD due to his prematurity (born 27wk5d). He spent a long time on the breathing tube and just recently had a tracheostomy. He will have the trach for a year or 2 depending on how long he needs for his lungs to grow out of the lung disease.
Prayers for your baby!
