Yuu-Neek Spelling

I coach a team of nine- and ten-year old girls and for the most part, their names are normal (Mary Rose, Millie (Emily), Miranda, Sophie, Alexia, Emmeline, Audrey, Liddy (Lydia), Anna, Addie (Addison), Pippa (Philippa), Claudia, Iris and Hannah).  One of the girls is named Schuyler and on the last day we had a cake with everyone's names on it.  Schuyler, a very confident and fiesty girl, was so excited that someone spelled her name right for once.  I felt so bad for her, because here she is, in fourth grade, and she is already frustrated by having people misspell her name all the time.  So for anyone who is thinking about giving their kid a "different" spelling, think of poor Schuyler and how much happier she would be as Skylar.

  • Schuyler is the correct spelling. Skylar is Americanized.
  • I never in a million years would have guessed that her name was Skylar.  Indifferent

  • I thought that Schuyler was the correct traditional spelling... huh.

  • Um. But that's the correct spelling.

Albeit for a boy. Though I once had a female professor named Schyler.

  • Fair points on the "correct" spelling.  But I think the story is still worthwhile, especially considering none of the girls would have spelled her name like that.  And the girls have all spent substantial time (lived for a few years) in a variety of counties in Europe.  So even if the correct, Dutch way is spelled Schuyler, it's a pain for her and she wishes her name was spelled Skylar.

She may feel that way now, but I bet she'll appreciate the way it is spelled when she is older.

I spent like 5 minutes trying to quote Annie's reply and kept getting an error message! Now I know what happens when you try to quote a deleted message.

For me, 'Americanized spelling' is a nice way of saying 'dumbed down phonetic spelling of a name from another culture/language.'

I think of how much happier she would be if she didn't have a boy's name.  Schuyler is the proper spelling.

  • Schuyler = Skylar?

    WTF?!

I totally did not know that. I've only even seen this name spelled the American, and the one I person I do know with the name Schuyler has it as ln and they pronounce it Shooler.

I was in the same boat at that age, still am sometimes, especially with how to say my name. My name is spelled Kyeara (key-air-uh). And people are always spelling it Kiera, Keira, or Kira. And pronouncing it keir-uh or key-are-uh. It gets annoying. I just ignore it now. My husband loves my name and the first year we were together he pronounced it wrong and never corrected him. At that point in my life, I had given up some.
