HIVES

Ugh!

DS woke up yesterday with hives on his chest/back. I thought that it might have been from his new pj shirt (had been washed). But later in the day it spread to his face and legs. I gave him Benadryl (per pedi) and it mostly cleared up. Today the hives are back. All over his face. :( Poor kid. He had a cold last week so his pedi thinks that this is just the end of a virus (pedi didnt see him though....). I know that hives are "common" but I hate them. DS finally feels better from his cold/asthma and now I am keeping him home for this.

Hoping it doesn't last long.
Thanks for letting me vent!

Re: HIVES

  • I hear you!  My DS has super sensitive skin and I have to watch everything.  I've found that once a week an oatmeal bath helps.  Walmart even has their own brand and I just pour the packet in the bath and DS doesn't know the difference.

True too that they can come on as a result of a virus.  Lame-o stuff!

  • I feel your pain.  DS has had a few viral infections that resulted in really weird rashes.  Luckily, they have seemed to bother me more than him.  The first one was when he was only a few weeks old and it really really freaked me out.  The most recent one resulted in HUGE hives on his buttocks and thighs.  So weird.
  • I know strep can cause a rash in some kids.  This happened to one of my students last week.

  • Ugh is right :( So sorry to hear that! Hopefully it'll pass quickly for him. Though I don't think you need to keep him home for hives if he's feeling fine otherwise.

I've had hives going on 2.5 years now. Every single morning I wake up with them. And I take nightly antihistamines. We still don't know what's "causing" it. Hives suck.

  • Ds had hives when he had a cold. They came and went pretty quickly - hope it is the same for your son.

  • The bad part is that once hives have been set off, the skin is hyper-sensitive and just about anything can set them off again :( and stress about the hives can be enough to set them off! DD got them the summer before last and they kept coming back and they were horiffic. Went to an allergist and took some nast tasting antihitamine for 3 months and FINALLY we seem to have beaten them. On the other hand ds got them after a virus and it totally seems to have been a 1x thing. Hope that's how it is for you!
