The Social Security website (www.ssa.gov) has a baby name tool where it tells you the rankings nationally of baby names for the year and also where you can type in a name and a gender and how many years you want to know about and it will tell you the rankings.
I found out that Hunter for a boy has been waaayyyy popular for the past 25 years (in the top 100 every year) even though it wasn't that popular on baby websites or in my area.
Avalon (girl) hasn't been in the top 1000 for the past 100 years, so no ranking (yay for original names!)
Wilder (boy) also hasn't been in the top 1000 for the past 100 years.
Now I'm busily typing in different names we are tossing around for this little one and seeing the trendiness of the names we like rising....
seriously- way cool tool for people wanting to have a very popular name or a very unique name!
Re: WHY did I not know this before?
I live on that site too, and I also die a little inside when a name I like becomes popular. Luckily most of the names I like right now are either way low in the rankings or haven't been ranked in the top 1000 in years. DD's name (Renee) is ranked #871 and that makes me happy. Uncommon, but not weird.
I'm really shocked Renee ranks so low. It's like the middle name of almost everyone I know. right along with Lynn and Marie.
I always dreamed of a son named Noah in high school. Had to give that one up. And I really would adore a Lydia in the family. But had to pass on that too.
