how is nap time looking for everyone right now?

naps are getting increasingly more frustrating lately (for me & pw). he went from consistently napping well (since he was maybe 4mns old) to being a total terror for naps lately. for the last several months he's been getting 2 naps a day (one in the morning usually between 8-9am depending on when he woke up), then one in the afternoon (around 1-2pm). but in the last few weeks he'll scream as soon as i head for his crib, in the mornings he has a total meltdown for a good 20-30mins until he passes out...i leave the room as soon as i put him down, i dont stay there to comfort, etc. afternoons are even worse, almost every other day, he can go for more than 1hr 30mins & at that point i just get him out b/c if i dont it messes up dinner times, bedtimes, etc. (he totally wins the cry it out game-he could last all day). a few friends are telling me they think he's ready for one nap a day & we've actually tried that but he'll end up sleeping maybe close to 2hrs, so if he's waking up around 12 he's got a really long stretch in the afternoon before bedtime & he does start to get cranky. i feel like he's a little young for just one nap but i dont have a clue...anyone else starting to have nap problems??

Re: how is nap time looking for everyone right now?

  • My daughter takes one 15-25 minute nap a day at daycare.  It's terrible, but she is is used to it now.  She basically STTN from 7:15 pm - 6:15 am.  She will wake one or twice and fuss, but put herself back to sleep (KNOCK WOOD, lately she has I should say).

On weekends she takes two, one from 10:00-11:30 ish and another from 2:00-3:00-ish.  I usually take one of them with her (heehee).

  • It sucks.  DS was taking two 1 1/2 hour naps a day, one morning and one afternoon.  Now lately at daycare he will take one 1 hour nap, and that's from 11-12.  Which means evenings are a total meltdown.  I wouldn't mind if he was going to one nap a day if it was a longer one!

  • Her naps are fantastic. 10-ish til 11:30, 3-4.

Her nighttimes are getting crazy though. Teeth are evil, seriously.

  • I think its crazy that my LO is still taking 4 naps. Goes right down...I see the signs when she is getting tired, etc. I cant imagine 2 naps.

  • I've been experiencing the same as you - I still try for 2 naps. First one is 2 - 3 hours after he wakes up, then the second is 3 - 4 hours after he wakes up from the first one. However, it seems most days he screams and cries until he passes out. I will leave him alone for 1 hour (unless at the end of the hour he seems to be putting himself to sleep). Some days he doesn't cry but just lays there and plays. However, when I start to think 1 nap is in the cards, he has a day like today. 1 hour nap from 10:30 to 11:30 and then 1 hour nap from 3 - 4. So I dunno...

How do you know when it's time to go down to 1??

Oh, also, I read in my sleep book (HSHHC - I was trying to figure him out the other day lol) and it says when they do go down to 1 nap move the bedtime earlier.

  • Cooper is all over the map.  One period of time he will be down to one 15-minute nap and now lately he is back to his original 3-ish hour nap.

  • Sophia used to nap wonderfully, 2 or 3 times daily for about an hour. Now, she will not nap unless you rock her, and if you place her in the crib she's awake. Nighttime sleeping is even worse. She's up every 15-45 min screaming her head off.

So her DR recommended CIO, we just started today and it's nervewracking but we are gonna push through this because we are expecting our second and I need my sleep! lol.
