How long did you use a play yard?

Was debating getting one of these now that the babies are mobile to keep them safe for short periods of time while I make dinner, etc.

If you had one, how long did you use it?  Were your kids content to play in there for 15 minutes?

Re: How long did you use a play yard?

  • We had a Superyard set up (almost two sets enclosing a pretty large area with foam mats underneath). I think I used baby jail for over a year.  I put it up when they became mobile and only took it down when they were a month shy of 2 (took it down when we put up our Christmas tree last year).

Yep, my girls would play in there for quite a while, but I did have a bunch of toys in their too.

  • we never used one in the house - we just have our livingroom "kid proof" for the most part and have it gated off on both sides.  When they were younger if i needed to leave them alone for a few minutes i put them into a PNP.

we have a huge play yard we have used outside and at parties - but never in the house.

I used to be Goldie_locks_5 but the new nest is so screwed up that I was forced to start over.

  • I do like Goldie - my living room is kid proofed for the most part and, if I need to leave one in a room unattended, say, to change the other's diaper, I put him or her in a PnP that I keep set up in a corner of the living room. I've also rolled it into the kitchen to cook dinner.

  • Unfortunately our living room is proving impossible to baby proof for several reasons (mostly having to do with O and my Mom needing access to it without stepping over a gate b/c we have a stair into the room, and because of O's non-baby friendly toys)  So I'm thinking yarding off part of it is my best bet.  Just wasn't sure how long it works since O was already 1 when we moved into this house and there was only one of him.  We just followed him around.  I don't want to spend a ton on a yard if I'm going to get 4 months out of it.  Looks like there's on on CL, though, so hopefully I can get it at a discount and re-sell it at the MOMs sale when I'm done.
  • I have 2 in my living room and yes they'll do for 15min of playtime. My kids will even play in there for a half hour if I need them to for some reason. I don't trust my boys together in the same PNP if I have to leave the room for a sec. So they get contained and separated. I also still use the changing station on 1 of them.

ETA: my LR isn't 100% babyproofed either b/c my stair gate starts a few stairs up.

ETA #2: sorry I thought you meant a PNP, not a supergate type thing. I used to use a supergate to contain them, but I used it as a "wall" and not a circle. They could push it over around 1yr. I never used it as a circle b/c I just didn't need it to do that w/ my floorplan. I always used the jumperoo/exersaucer for containment and then the PNPs when they outgrew those toys.

  • I got mine when the girls were 7 months I think...and we pulled them down when they were 14/15 months.

We bought 2 Super Yards.  Worth every penny though, even for 7 months.

  • We weren't able to use ours as baby jail for very long, as they hated getting left in without an adult in there with them, even with plenty of toys. One started trying to climb out before she was one. We had to put her in shoes so she couldn't get her toes in the holes.

We do still use it to keep them out of things, though (like the Christmas tree, right now). We've since moved and more or less babyproofed the entire first floor, so we don't have to contain them anymore.
