Cloth Diapering

Is it normal to have to wash twice?

I am using Nellies and I am actually using double the amount because one scoop was not working. If I do this routine it takes the smell out.

Wash cold, Wash hot with two scoops of nellies and calgon, Wash cold, Wash hot two scoops of Nellies, wash cold.

Should I have to wash that much, it is not killing my electric bill and I do noy mind because the daipers smell good, but is it normal and is there anything I shoupd do differently?

Re: Is it normal to have to wash twice?

  • I use Tide Free & Clear, not Nellies, but I just use a pre-wash (no detergent), normal wash (1/2 normal amount of detergent) and extra rinse. I have a HE washer. I have BumGenius diapers and haven't had any problems or smells so far.

  • I use Tide original powder and do a cold rinse, a hot wash/cold rinse cycle, and then an additional cold rinse with ecover.

  • Not normal

Quick wash cold no detergent followed by heavy wash with heavy soil and extra rinse options on hot with detergent.

Why am I so compelled to answer laundry questions?! I need a shower cookie...

  • Why could the poop smell be sticking around then? Is there something I should do?

  • Maybe you should try a different detergent?

I don't use Nellies I use RNG but having to wash twice would not fly with me.  Good luck!

  • I'm not familiar with Nellie's, but I'd say not normal.  We use Arm & Hammer Sensitive, and I do a cold rinse, hot soak/wash, cold rinse.  If there's anything particularly nasty in there I might throw an extra rinse at the beginning.

What type of diapers are you using?  Suedecloth in particular may develop stink with time.  Also, how many diapers do you run in a load, do you have an HE machine, and if LO is on solids, how clean are you able to get the diapers pre-wash?

No.  I've used Nellie's with no problems (1 scoop in my top loader) but you might want to try a different detergent...

  • I would love to try something else but everything else cases him a rash, so I will try to figure out maybe I need to rinse them better before hand and make sure to wash every other day no matter what. I am going to stick to Nellies though because I do not want to go back to him getting rashes.

  • You could try adding baking soda and vinegar to the wash as well. That has really helped freshen up the smell of my toddler's strong smelling diapers!

  • How much do you add? Also do you think sprsying them with bac out after spraying them off would help?

  • Are you spraying? , My gut says you still have poop on the diapers when they go in the wash. Spray them or scrape REALLY WELL, so that no poop is left on the diaper, only skidmarks.

How much water are you using?  What is your child eating?

You always want to use the highest water setting on your washer and only around 12-18 CDs per load (depending on the type).  If they are eating solids, you need to remove as much waste as posible before putting in the washer.

  • We use Nellie's, too, but only have to do 1 wash. We do use 2 scoops with Calgon, though. One thing I've had to do is add water. I run a rinse first, then run a rinse with no spin, then hot wash with detergent + calgon, then rinse with no spin and then rinse again. It's working for us. I hope you can get down to 1 wash! Having to do 2 would drive me nuts!
