TTC After a Loss 6 Months+

Factor V Leiden

Anyone else have it?

I was going through some old papers (from June 2010), and I had a note that said Factor v Leiden deficiency. I immediately grabbed my blood work report, and sure enough - it was listed there. My old RE who ordered the B/W never mentioned ANYTHING to me about this - it was the nurse - but thank God I wrote it down...

I called my new RE and talked to the nurse, and she said that I will be put on Lovenox injections once I get my BFP (starting meds for IVF in January). Ugh - the obstacles keep piling up!

Re: Factor V Leiden

  • I can't believe your old RE didn't mention anything about it!  I don't have it, but I'm pretty sure it means you need to be on blood thinners during a pregnancy, so it's good your new RE is prescribing you lovenox when you get a BFP.  I have other clotting issues (we're doing IVF right now), and my RE is starting me on heparin the day of the embryo transfer, so if you have questions about the experience, let me know.

  • I have 1 copy of the gene as well and I am supposed to be on lovenox once I get a BFP too.   Although, if I am on stims (for IVF or otherwise) then I am supposed to be on it starting when I go on stims.  I guess the stims can increase the chance of blood clots.  According to my hemotologist anyway, my RE made me go see one of those dr's as soon as I tested + for having 1 copy as a pre-caution.

I am surprised that your previous RE didn't say anything either, but there isn't much research on whether it effects things in early pregnancy or not. Some dr's believe it is only an issue later on in pregnancy and pp.

Glad you noticed it and that you have a plan in place going forward.

  • I can't believe your old RE didn't mention it. I'm glad that you caught it though and that your new RE is on board. I'm sorry for the pile of obstacles though. Sending you ((hugs)).
