dry skin on face, what to do?

sprout has dry skin around his mouth/nose area.  it's kind of eczema-like.  i've called the dr's but they say that don't really do anything for rashes unless it looks infected.

it's not bothering him, but when he eats, he smears the food all over his face which really aggravates it.

At a minimium, i'd maybe like something that i could apply as a "shield" against tomato sauce (which is my only reliable vehicle for getting veggies down his gullet right now) or oranges (which is a favorite).

Thoughts?

(other than being picky about veggies, nothing else has changed in our house or diet--plus i've tried eliminating some thing to see if they were the issue--so i'm fairly confident it's not an allergic reaction & instead is the drier weather).

If you're not against it, I would think Vaseline would be a good barrier (and also might help with the rashiness). Cortisone is usually good for rashes but I wouldn't use that unless it's right before he goes to bed, so he doesn't accidentally get it in his mouth.

Also, maybe a humidifier in his room?

A humidifier makes a huge difference in C's dry skin. So does that Burt's Bees balm in the little glass jar.

I put Aquaphor on DS's cheeks, where he's prone to getting a little ezcema.

We've used Vaseline around ds's mouth when it gets a little chapped.  It worked great.

I was going to say vaseline as well for both the "barrier" and as a moisturizer to put on at night so it soaks in. I also use vaseline when the kids may be outside for a while to protect against wind burn.

For dry skin in general, we've also had success with this Aveeno lotion which is usually available at Target.

I was going to say aquaphor for a barrier and also Callendula Cream for the rough patches - our pedi recommended it and it is the only thing that's really worked for DS.

ditto the humidifier and the vaseline.  If it is mild eczema, then maybe try the cortizone or aquaphor.

Both of my kids have dry skin (like their mom) and the vaseline/humidifier combo typically gets us through the winters.

thanks guys, i'll look into these products.

we already have a humidifier in his room, but i think he's inherited my "omg, it's winter i'm going to go from oily to super dry!!" skin.  it doesn't help that he's semi-teething.  all that slobber can't help!

Yes, the slobber plus the cold weather makes it a lot worse.

We use vaseline and cortisone in small doses (usually when DS sleeps).

as far as I'm concerned Aquafor is a miracle ointment for all facial rashes. When Warner was smaller and drooled a lot he would always have random red, dry patches pop up around his mouth or on his cheeks. A little Aquafor would clear them right up after only a day or so. And it's the consistency of vaseline, so it would also make a good barrier :-)

Ditto this.  Aquafor is amazing stuff and I use on the areas prone to chaffing on the girls.  Maggie used to bleed behind her ears from getting so dry and the aquafor worked so well on that.  Molly got rubbed raw around her mouth once and it worked great there as well as around the nose when they are wiped so many times a day.  It works great as a barrier too.

Tritto (is that a word?).  DD2 has had a runny nose for the last month and every night I smear Aquafor on her cheeks, nose and around her mouth.  She has no redness or dryness - you can't tell she get her nose wiped 100 times an hour for the last month.

Another rec for CA Baby calendula cream.  It's great!

I also really like CJ's BUTTer.  It's a great multi-purpose ointment.
