Weekend trips in the area?

I'll spare you all the long story of how we got stuck with the house (short version: fiance's mom bought a house with her 401k, had him gut it, and then decided she liked the one she was renting better so informed us she was "gifting us" the gutted house and we could just pay back her 401k), but since living in our apartment left NO extra funds for house rebuilding, and she was at our throats about paying her, we gave up the apartment and moved in with her. Bad idea. She's insanely controlling (our first day included a half hour tutorial on how to sort and fold her towels). So we've moved into my moms house, but I have 4 younger siblings still at home, one of whom has her own baby... it's loud. I love it, but it doesn't leave much for togetherness.

Anyway, we live near Westland/Dearborn... and I was looking for suggestions for a cheap weekend destination. Just to be on our own again for a few days to breathe. We found out I was pregnant shortly after moving in with his mom, and haven't really had a chance to just be excited together. Being from such a large, very poor family my mom never really did vacations or day trips, so I don't know what kind of interesting places are around here. Maybe a nice-ish hotel downtown near the museums? We're both into history and science. Or a weekend in Frankenmuth or... I don't actually know any other cool stuff around here.

Any suggestions would be awesome!

Re: Weekend trips in the area?

  • Staying in downtown Detroit would be fun.  I would recommend staying at Greektown or the Marriott at the Ren Cen.  That way you can walk to quite a few destinations.  While downtown you can go ice skating at campus martius, go to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Pewabic Pottery, gamble at one of the casinos, have a nice dinner (Opus One, Coach Insignia, Andiamo, Angleina Bistro, Moasaic, I could go on and on).

You could also stay at a bed and breakfast in Romeo.  There is one called the Hudson Inn, B&B which I pass every day.  You can walk to downtown Romeo and visit the little shops and restaurants.

The Royal Park in Rochester is also an idea of somewhere you could stay.  The buildings of downtown Rochester are all covered in lights for Christmas and look amazing.

     Good luck!

  • Awww sorry to hear that! sounds like you def need a mini vaca! ... Well I am not sure how local you are wanting to stay! When I was pregnant the hubbs and I took a "babymoon" to Niagra Falls ( we live in the metro detroit area) It was about a 4 hour drive. But since this is the off season it was dirt cheap- we were just looking for some place we had never been together and to get away. We stayed at the Days Inn- nice staff, Clean hotel- It was insanely cheap per night and on top of that they gave us vouchers for breakfast at the returaunt across the street every morning. Can not complain! There are two new casinos there, outlet malls, the falls light up at night and are just breathtaking. If you are looking for somewhere closer than I say Frankenmuth- especially this time of year, not sure if you have ever been but birch run is just prior to into town so tons of outlet shopping, they have great food- everything is in walking distance, brewerys, lots of little shops downtown and Bronners a HUGE Christmas store- We stayed in town at the Fairfield Inn, Room was the best deal in town- once again great staff, clean, modern decor- hands down we will stay here everytime we come in- there are other hotels that have indoor waterparks as well. However being a guest you still have to pay to get into the waterpark and their rooms are close to $300 per night. If the waterpark is something you are interested in- you can still go- there is a daily admission rate and you do not have to stay at their hotel to go. We did not go to the waterpark- the hotel had a pool and hot tub - at the time my daughter was only a few months- we took her swimming at the pool- water was clean and warm so that was good enough for us. We are looking forward to going there again soon too!
