I'll spare you all the long story of how we got stuck with the house (short version: fiance's mom bought a house with her 401k, had him gut it, and then decided she liked the one she was renting better so informed us she was "gifting us" the gutted house and we could just pay back her 401k), but since living in our apartment left NO extra funds for house rebuilding, and she was at our throats about paying her, we gave up the apartment and moved in with her. Bad idea. She's insanely controlling (our first day included a half hour tutorial on how to sort and fold her towels). So we've moved into my moms house, but I have 4 younger siblings still at home, one of whom has her own baby... it's loud. I love it, but it doesn't leave much for togetherness.
Anyway, we live near Westland/Dearborn... and I was looking for suggestions for a cheap weekend destination. Just to be on our own again for a few days to breathe. We found out I was pregnant shortly after moving in with his mom, and haven't really had a chance to just be excited together. Being from such a large, very poor family my mom never really did vacations or day trips, so I don't know what kind of interesting places are around here. Maybe a nice-ish hotel downtown near the museums? We're both into history and science. Or a weekend in Frankenmuth or... I don't actually know any other cool stuff around here.
Any suggestions would be awesome!
Re: Weekend trips in the area?
Staying in downtown Detroit would be fun. I would recommend staying at Greektown or the Marriott at the Ren Cen. That way you can walk to quite a few destinations. While downtown you can go ice skating at campus martius, go to the Detroit Institute of Arts, Pewabic Pottery, gamble at one of the casinos, have a nice dinner (Opus One, Coach Insignia, Andiamo, Angleina Bistro, Moasaic, I could go on and on).
You could also stay at a bed and breakfast in Romeo. There is one called the Hudson Inn, B&B which I pass every day. You can walk to downtown Romeo and visit the little shops and restaurants.
The Royal Park in Rochester is also an idea of somewhere you could stay. The buildings of downtown Rochester are all covered in lights for Christmas and look amazing.
Good luck!
