C-sections

would u schedule c-section right after xmas or after the new year??

I have marginal placenta previa and will go for an in depth ultrasound next week..then most likely an amnio at 36 weeks to check lungs..then from there do a c-section.

Doc said can be as soon as the 27th..

would that be too close to christmas or should we do it around the 5th? I am not sure what is better insurance wise either..since new policy year starts Jan. 1st.

I hear about this children who get 'screwed' because of too close to the holidays..

  • I'd do it before for the tax break. :) Also you have already spent so much on insurance and will definitely hit any deductible you have. Next year your deductible will start over from the first of january most likely and will have to pay more out of pocket in the end. And I'd love to meet my baby sooner. :)

  • My DD was born in Jan 9th. She never get "screwed" by family for presents for her birthday. She gets odds and ends that she didnt get for christmas.  If she had been born closer to christmas, same deal. We actually asked Family about it because this LO is due around Jan3-6th.

  • I am going to call my insurance this week and see what our deductible is and what the out of pocket costs would be if she was born this year or next...

  • Personally I would want to allow my baby to cook as long as possible. They need those last few weeks inside and unless some medical issue is making it dangerous for you to stay pregnant schedule your c/s as late as possible.

  • I'd wait until the new year. Keep that baby on the inside for as long as possible!
  • If you had a choice, I personally would wait until after the New Year.

    Yes

  • My son turns one on 12/22. There was no way around it because he was an emergency c-section. I don't think he'll be screwed due to the holiday being so close. You just got to be creative to make sure they don't feel that way when they're older.

This is great advice. I had to give birth at 36 weeks due to Complete Placenta Previa. I wish I could have gone an extra week. When Alex got here, he had to go into the NICU for 4 days due to breathing problems.

Did they do the amnio? What did they say about his lung deveopment?

The did not do the amnio. They did, however, give me 2 steroid shots before hand. The Dr felt there was no need for an Amnio since I needed to have him early no matter what.

I went in the Sunday before at 11AM and then Monday at 11AM for the steroid shots. Had him on Tues at 1235PM.

  • I am not sure I understand why you need to deliver at 36 weeks??  Even with the previa, why wouldn't they schedule it for 38 weeks or so?? Why not let her in there as long as possible so she can develop in the environment she was meant to develop in.  Even with the amnio...I am just not sure I understand.

I do understand wanting to see your LO sooner rather than later.  I am miserable already with 3 weeks to go until my scheduled date (which is the same week you are talking about but you are 2 1/2 weeks behind me??).   But I want my LO in there as long as possible..I want him healthy not just able to breath.  Just because the amnio says her lungs are developed doesn't mean she couldn't have other problems that need attention due to being delivered early.

I don't think insurance and such is a strong enough point to deliver early, unless there is something you haven't said in your posting about other medical issues being prevalent.  I think ensuring that your LO is born healthy and able to handle being outside the womb should be number one on your list.

No true in my case. My Dr refused to let me go past 36 weeks. With Previa, the longer you go, the more chance you have of hemorrhaging and bleeding, thus putting you, and more importantly, the baby at severe risk.

  • Personally, I'd wait.  Hitting my deductible and getting the tax break doesn't compare anything to giving my baby more time to mature and be ready for life on the outside.  Yes, the tax break is "nice" but lowering the odds of NICU time and other complications doesn't even come close.

He's the single greatest thing I've done in my life and reminds me daily of how fun (and funny) life can be.  He's turned out pretty swell for having such a heartless and evil mother.
