f/u to dairy/soy free post - how long to see a difference?

How long did it take to see an improvement once you cut out the dairy or soy? My friend cut it out a few days and no improvement yet . . . I think she's getting a little desperate.

  • Make sure she checks her prenatal.  A lot of prenatals have soy.

  • It took about a week for us. I've heard it can take up to 2 weeks for some people.

Has she cut out absolutely all dairy/soy, even minimal amounts? I learned the hard way that even very small amounts caused a reaction, so I had to be vigilant about reading labels.

Does the baby have symptoms other than colic/fussiness? Are there GI issues?

She could try eliminating all of the "top 8" allergens for a week and see what happens, but it's really hard. The only other thing I cut out was nuts, because I'd noticed a reaction after eating Nutella, but it turned out nuts were fine and he was reacting to the milk in the nutella.

  • it might take upto 2 weeks, it's a very difficult process, I've been there, it's hard

  • Thanks for all your help so far . . . she really appreciates it and I'll pass this along.

  • We saw some improvement in a few days - maybe 5 or 6? I don't think that LO's sensitivity was that high, though, as I could eat soy and also was able to go back to dairy in the past few weeks.

  • I did soy/dairy/nuts/seafood and random other things (tomatoes, citrus, etc.) for DD1.  I saw some improvement within a week or two but the most was by four weeks.  I cut out all soy/dairy, even hidden.  I meant to post on your post below, but she should look for kosher foods - they are usually dairy-free or clearly state they have dairy.  I didn't do eggs or gluten because I saw an improvement, but it could be one of those.

ETA: I forgot to mention that I'm lactose intolerant, so I don't eat dairy as a rule and I use the Daiya brand of cheese.  Definitely not as good as the real thing, but works for grilled cheese, quesadiallas, etc.  I pretty much dislike all the soy products (milk, cheese, etc.) so I use coconut milk, coconut milk ice cream, almond milk yogurt (becase it's cheaper than coconut milk yogurt), Daiya cheese and Earth's Balance spread/"butter".
