Baby Names

Confused...

Why do others seem to say they don't like names, since they sound made up? All names are made up from names, or combined from two names?

I just don't get it. LOL. I guess I'm too into thinking about other peoples opinions?

  • Totally agree !!!

Every name has to start somewhere ! More power to the people that come up with cool names and are brave enough to use them !

  • I kinda agree b/c all names WERE made up by someone (a lot of classic names like Jessica and such were made up by Shakespeare, as it turns out) and I don't hate all made up names or names that "sound" made up -- a lot of which just turn out to be obscure names from other countries.

I just hate the made up names that sound REALLY stupid and are going to get the kids made fun of or beat up once they're in school.

I personally like how an old poster explained it once:

Words and names have etymology - history. Onomastics is the study of names. When you encounter an object that is new to you you generally ask what it is called. You don't just make up a word for it and then announce to everyone that THAT is what such an object is called because what are NAMES anyway but arbitrary groupings of letters that someone a long time ago decided were correct.

It goes beyond the name itself. Most names have indicators in the groupings of letters that tell you much more than whether the person is male or female. They tell a story of language, culture, society and history. So yes, a name like Jaelyn (*gag*) or the various -ayden names will have a history of early 21st century experimentation. There is a REASON certain letters were grouped together to make different names and why others were not.

Modern made-up names make me want to gag.

    That is fantastic, well said.

    Ditto

  • There is a difference between older made up names, like Jessica and Wendy, and modern made up names like Vanajhia or Laquisha.  Older names came from somewhere (I think JM Barrie was going for a variation of windy for Wendy, because they were flying), whereas newer made up names are pretty much just a jumble of letters.  And I have had students with both those names that I mentioned.

Amen to this! I have always thought the same about spelling too. Is there a book somewhere that says, "name must be spelled this way" What if the 1st person to come up with a great name picked a horrible way to spell it? Should we follow their "tradtion" and spell it that way because that was the way it was intended? Maybe it's just because I am not afraid to step out of the box.

    PP had me cracking up-
"There is a difference between older made up names, like Jessica and Wendy, and modern made up names like Vanajhia or Laquisha." HaHaHa I only wish I could post some of the names I see on a daily basis at the school I work for. They are truly made up and most of the time I am left speechless.
