On vacation--sleep help!!!

So tonight is only night two of our vaca. Yesterday was a long day for DS with all the traveling, waking up at the crack of dawn, no naps, yet he still didn't fall asleep until 11pm! Woke up at his usual 8:30am though. He had a couple good naps today while in the car but he did get in a total of 2:40 min in naps and it doesn't look like he wants to go to sleep tonight either, not even the old trick of nursing to sleep will work!

So I guess what I'm getting to is did your LO have trouble falling asleep in a new surrounding? What was his/her sleep like on vacation? Any tips you wanna share with me? Please and thanks!

Re: On vacation--sleep help!!!

  • I have no tricks unfortunately. Just wanted to say goodluck! I hope tomorrows better.

We took a week long road trip with DD for Thanksgiving, from northern Va to Louisiana. Took a week to get there and back, and we were only in LA for 2 nights. She did great though, I had no issues getting her to sleep, some places we're better than others due to the mattresses, but I'm bedsharing with her, so I think that makes it a little easier. We also made sure we stopped for the night with enough time to get dinner, and still have her bedtime routine done on time, which I think definitely helped a lot.

Good luck! I really hope tomorrow is better for you!

  • Wish I could help!  IL's watched LO for a week while we were on vacation for a wedding. When we came home she was waking 5-6 times a night when she usually STTN!  We stayed with them an extra couple nights for Thanksgiving.  It took about a week to get her back on schedule and until she slept in her own crib.

Now she is back to normal. Next time I go to the in laws, I am going to bring one of her crib sheets so it is a little bit more familar and maybe even her bumpers!  Sounds extreme, but I like my sleep.

And when we drove up there (6 hours), we left around her bedtime so she would sleep.  It worked, except it got very tiring driving in the dark evening.

      Good luck and Have fun!

  • I wish I had better news, but over Thanksgiving we traveled and DS ended up bedsharing with us for the entire trip. Every night we really tried the pack n play, but he was waking up every 45 minutes (usually sleeps 5-7 hours in a row). When we got home we went cold turkey back to his crib. There was definitely more crying involved than usual, but for the entire week after our trip he slept 9 hour stretches followed by 3 hour stretches. Traveling messes him up!
  • We sleep at home with a noise machine, so we bring ours on vacation with us! Usually we can borrow a fan when we're there, but the noise machine helps so much. Gentle Giraffe helps when we're on the go.
