Question about circumcision

My husband and I are planning on circumcising our son when he's born.  What are some good tips/advice that you guys can tell me about how to care for him afterwards that maybe the nurses and doctors won't necessarily tell us?

  • They'll tell you everything you need to know.  There's not much to do: keep Vaseline on it pretty much sums it up.  The Vaseline sometimes causes the diaper to leak, but it's temporary.

  • Yes agree-- they'll tell you everything you need to know. My son was VERY fussy after his. They gave us the option of giving him Tylenol beforehand and we chose to do so-- ask if that's an option.

  • I've had two boys in 2010 (one Jan, one Dec). Caring for circ. site is SO important for the comfort of your baby and they will tell you how to do it but they do that along with everything else, so it's hard to take everything in.

When he comes back from the procedure (usually 12- 24 hours after birth)  he will have  a bandage wrapped around it at first and antibiotic ointment would have been applied to the site. After a few diaper changes though, the bandage will come off. You will need to

    1. wash your hands very thoroughly

    2. squeeze A and D ointment - about the size of a lima bean- on your finger then gently coat the site.

    3. B4 putting diaper on, use vaseline and coat the front of the inside of the diaper with vaseline - this will ensure that the raw skin does not come into contact with a dry area - if it does, it will stick and you will have to remove it which is extremely painful for your son.

You really can't put too much of the A&D or Vaseline on (esp. the vaseline!!) - the move you keep everything coated and clean, the faster it will heal. It usually only take about 3-4 days max to heal. I would go ahead and purchase a large tub of vaseline and a large tube of A&D if I were you.

*Also, just an fyi for boys - I never knew this!- but if you need to fold the front of the diaper down to avoid it touching the umbilical stump site, fold it inward so that the diaper won't leak.

GL! You are smart to ask in advance! I wish I had!

  • Agree with pps.  There's not much to it and they'll tell you everything you need to know.

  • They will tell you.  Just put as much vaseline on it as possible and keep pulling the skin back so it doesn't stick.  I think I went out and bought vaseline twice, that's how much I used.

  • our hospital used the plasti-bel kind, some hospitals don't. if they do use the plasti-bel don't worry when it starts to "fall off". don't pull on it to get it off, it will slowly come off over a few days and its not abnormal to kind of be attached partially while coming off. I thought it was weird but that's normal I guess. Also, our son had some yellowish like fluid looking thing underneath the area where it was done and it turns out thats normal as well so dont worry if you see that, it can look like an infection but its not. GL!

  • They will tell you everything that you need to know, but I found putting a lot of extra vasaline on there afterwards helped it not stick, even after they aid I didnt need to anymore.
