Went crib shopping with MIL yesterday, and LOVED one from a specialty store. It was $500. Is that totally insane for a crib? We figure it will probably we used for multiple babies (this is our first) and it converts to a bed. Anyone else spending that much or more?
Re: How much are you spending on a crib?

I spent less than $200, but I don't think $500 is ridiculous. Some people spend much more than that. It always depends on how much money your family makes and how much YOU want to put toward a crib.
I don't plan to have our baby sleep in the crib for the first few months anyway, and I find the amount of time spent in a crib to be pretty short, so I wanted something pretty inexpensive but with good ratings. But I am splurging in other places that others may not, like on a good breast pump.
We spent 200 on DS crib. But we also knew that we would get a new crib for each baby. DS' is a convertible one so it turns to a toddler then a full sized bed. And I just think it's HIS bed and he is comfortable with it. He absolutely LOVES his crib, so I'm not going to take that away from him and put him in a new bed and give it to his sister/brother.
Same with future kids. Plus then I don't have to worry about getting them new bed frames and new toddler beds when they grow out of each stage. Plus, DS will only be 2 when this LO comes and I don't think he'll be ready for a big boy bed just yet.
We're looking to spend around $800 for the crib and dresser, so maybe around $300-$400? We wanted something that was built solidly and out of quality materials so it would last, since we're going to get a convertible. We're hoping the kid will use it until he's around 10 years old or so.
I don't think $500 is insane if you can afford it and that's where you choose to spend your money!

Honestly, yes $500 is too much for H and I to spend on a crib. But I don't know your budget.
We found one we really liked for $349 in store. I went looking online and target has it for $245.
Do your homework, read reviews and shop around. You never know what deals you may find.
We are doing an IKEA crib, changing table/storage thingy, and a dresser. All together it will be around $200. I think it all is based on your budget, your style, and how you want to spend money. For us, I don't want to spend my $$ on furniture but thats just our personal pref!
I don't think $500 is ridiculous if you are comfortable spending that amount and it is the quality of product you want. Now something like $2000-3000 is too much IMO....
My husband and I spent about $500 on DD's crib. It is a good quality crib that we will use for all of our children. It is Young America, by Stanley Furniture. We looked for the most sturdy, solid crib and this is what we chose. I think you should go for what you are most comfortable spending.

We aren't getting one. Unless a need is shown. Cosleeping and then straight to a twin bed with a rail.
We spent $250 or so on Connor's crib and it's great (solid wood, modern, non toxic finishes, convertible with the conversion kit/bed rail).
We spent $50 on the crib for Baby #2 -- it was a barely used Ikea crib and mattress, plus some sheets and the conversion kit! SO awesome!
I could never see myself spending $500 on a crib... maybe if we were only going to have one baby.
I'll love you forever,
I'll like you for always,
As long as I'm living my baby you'll be.

I do think how much you spend varies by family and their priorities. We want a safe crib that won't break the bank so we can focus our money elsewhere for new baby (like investing in cloth diapers). That's just us.

We spent $2700 and change on: double dresser/changing table with hutch, crib & bookcase. It is from Baby's Dream and I absolutely fell in love with it. Our line of thinking with the price is that baby will grow with it and have it forever. We still use my bedroom set from when I was in high school -- same concept and it is absolutely beautiful furniture (not the same company). Money well worth it to us.
Well *I* think that's crazy, but I'm cheap. I definitely won't be spending over $200 and will be trying to stay closer to $100 than $200.
As for it converting to a bed...keep in mind all it converts to is a headboard/footboard for a full-sized bed. When I was a kid I had a twin bed and that was great, it left me more space in my room for not-bed and I didn't need a giant one. Further I had a bed with lots of storage built in for all my toys and such. I preferred that to a fancy bar headboard. And finally, you still have to buy rails to convert those beds, and a mattress, and buying a full mattress costs considerably more than a twin. So the whole "it converts to a full bed!" is not much of an argument for me, to do so still costs a good amount and probably isn't what I'd ideally want for my 5 year old, anyway!
ETA I meant I think it's crazy FOR ME. I have no problem if that's where other people want to spend their money. For me, as long as it's safe and will hold up well enough I can likely use it for a second, I'm golden. I can find something I like cheaper, so for me I'd rather do that than spend an extra few hundred on a crib that is more designer-y. But that's just me. Everyone spends their money in different places! :-)

I'm getting this great one from Burlington Coat Factory that is $270 and made from rubberwood instead of pine so it will scratch less. Babies R Us sells it as well but we don't have one in town and their shipping for cribs is CRAZY expensive.
