2nd Trimester

What is this stuff?!?

OK so, I was in bed earlier and noticed some wetness on my nipple, and gave in a squeeze and there's all this weird clear stuff that is OILY and STICKY! I am able to get quite a bit out too, every little squeeze gets out about a quarter inch pool of it, my fingers are all sticky now. What the balls?

I would have put "TMI" but in a few months we're all gonna have stuff coming out of all our boobs, so I figured it wasn't really TMI ;)

  • It's probably normal but I would call my doctor about any nipple discharge...especially if it Is only coming from one breast.

  • Sounds like colostrum? I don't remember it being sticky, but then again it mainly went in the baby's mouth, I didn't have time to examine it.

  • My doctor said it was colostrum.  Mine started about a week ago.  I think its a good sign for milk production but mine do the same thing, they were wet and itchy and when i press on my breasts more will come out.  Sometimes my nipples will hurt and if i press and let a little out i guess? it will feel better.  Its exciting, it made pregnancy seem so real :)

  • It's colostrum.  Women get it at different points in their pregnancy, and some don't see it until the baby comes.  If it's leaking quite a bit you may need to start wearing breast pads so it doesn't leak through your shirt.

  • You're starting to lactate. Totally normal and starts at different times in pregnancy for each woman.

As long as you don't have nipple pain or foul-smelling discharge from them, it's totally fine. You might want to pick up some breast pads if it's happening frequently.

  • Sounds like Colostrum. Perfectly normal and occurs at different times for different women. For some women it doesn't happen at all before LO is born and that's still normal. With #1 I was leaking fairly early, and with #2 I didn't leak at all; it's not an indicator of your supply or chances of successful bfing. Like PPs said, it may be worth getting some breast pads in case you leak onto clothes.

  • That's good to hear! I can get some from the other breast too, but just not nearly as much, go figure! Thanks guys! :)

  • It's normal.  I can "milk" the clear stuff too.  Just wait until it turns dark yellow....that's colostrum.  It's your boobs getting ready to nurse.  If it gets smelly I would call your dr, just in case it's not an infection.  It's lovely isn't it?

  • It's pretty gross, but satisfying to squeeze out if I'm totally honest. I have a regular appointment tuesday, I'll mention it then :) It doesn't smell at all, I tasted it (gross I know, but I had to see) and it was kinda sweet.
