1 yr old cake - Breast milk Frosting?

Hello!  I am fairly new to this blog and have been lurking since LO was born.  We try to be pretty healthy and I am proud to say we are almost at a year of breastfeeding, cloth diapers, baby wearing and co-sleeping/bed sharing!

I am having a hard time finding a topping to LO 1st birthday cake....I plan on doing a applesauce cake but want something other than frosting.  Was thinking of smashed bananas?  Fresh fruit?  I have a tons of frozen breast milk and not opposed to making a frosting with some if able!  Looking for suggestions!    The rest of the family/friends will get "regular" cupcakes.

  • Seriously?  Breastmilk??  Wow.  That sorta made me throw up in my mouth a bit.  How about just making a muffin sort of cake?  Carrot cake maybe?  To be honest, she doesn't get a ton of sweets, but we figured that it wouldn't kill her to have a slice of birthday cake on her birthday to celebrate.

  • I agree, BM frosting kind of weirded me out too, although as long as its just going to your kid I guess it's not a big deal.  If you would make a frosting, why would it have to be made out of BM? Just make it home made the only fashioned way.

other ideas........maybe apple butter or something along that line of thought.

or you could always just not frost ot if you are truly against the idea of frosting.

  • While I wouldn't want to consume someone breastmilk frosting, she said she was giving guests "regular" frosting, so I really don't understand why everyone was so harsh.  It's what her dc has had for a year so what is wrong with it being used in frosting?

That being said, op, I don't think you'd be able to find a thickening agent for the bm to make it into frosting.  I think mashed bananas would work real well with applesauce cake.

I agree!  Pedis recommend mixing breast milk into oatmeals, etc so I don't see how frosting is any different.  It's not like the OP was trying to slip the party-goers her breastmilk.

I wonder though if mashed bananas would turn brown on you?  What about something like a homemade whipped cream (you could make it organic)? Or maybe an organic glaze?  Or are you trying to stay away from sugar entirely?

  • Oh and my kids, along with all of the other first birthdays I've witnessed, never really ate much of the cake anyway so I wouldn't lose sleep over it or anything.

  • It's an original idea... I have no problem with this.

With that said, I keep invisioning MIL unknowingly taking a taste of the baby's cake and encouraging LO to eat up. Could be an interesting party:)

You can make whipped cream out of coconut milk, too, if you're avoiding dairy:

I like the idea of fresh fruit! I'm thinking about making a fresh fruit tart for LO's birthday (yes, I am aware it's 7 months away! I like to bake. And plan :)

  • Wow early responders, harsh.

OP - kudos to you for thinking outside the box. Like others have said, I don't know how much breast milk you would be able to use in the frosting.  Personally, I made DD a very low-sugar whole wheat banana muffin and topped it with homemade whipped cream (just organic heavy cream, no sugar, with a little bit of juice from some frozen cranberries to make it pink).  She had never had any sugar to that point and it just didn't make sense to me to give her something sugar-loaded and artificially colored.

Also, for that extra breast milk, consider making her some homemade whole wheat pancakes, subbing the bm for the milk called for in the recipe.  Then freeze - super easy finger-food breakfasts!  I don't know how much extra nutrition they have over regular milk pancakes since they end up getting cooked, but it can't hurt.

  • As long as she's not unknowingly serving it to guests why would that make you "throw up in your mouth a little?"

  • Oh, but hey OP... it's not a "blog" it's a message board.
  • Thank you all for the kind suggestions (minus one or two).  So far my little one has had no sugar (as much as I can control) and no dairy, so was trying to think outside the box as one response said....so thank you for the help!    I know he will not be getting a lot of it, but why sugar overload him....the birthday party is truly more for us than him (not like he will remember any of this).    Think I might stick with the bananas and fruit....will try to remember to post pictures!  Thanks again ladies!!

  • My oldest is allergic to just about everything and for his birthday cakes I've use applesauce in the past as icing.  I've also used coconut oil and powdered sugar.

But I don't think the breastmilk thing is weird at all.  I tried making yogurt from mine for my son, but it didn't work.

  • I'm not sure if you could make frosting from breast milk, it might not be thick enough? You could always try making a little batch to test it out!

I do not understand why everyone is grossed out by breast milk, especially if it's only for your LO! But I personally would totally eat breast milk frosting or cheese, or coffee, or pretty much anything made with BM from a healthy woman!

  • I continue to be amazed at how a woman's naturally-produced, biologically important, life-sustaining breastmilk makes other women "want to throw up in my mouth a little bit" when discussed outside the realm of nipple-to-mouth or nipple-to-pump. I find this attitude akin to the "cover yourself up" idea surrounding bfing in public. It's pretty disempowering to women and our amazing abilities.

The OP did not offer to deliver her breastmilk to your doorstep and ask you to drink it. She did not say she plans to start a business selling breastmilk confections to the masses. She simply said she has a ton of frozen breastmilk and wondered if she could put it to use.

Furthermore, there was a suggestion to make frosting "the old fashioned way." Hm. So, the theoretical idea of using one's own milk to make something for a child to eat ONE DAY is sickening in comparison to whipping up a batch of antibiotic-laden, hormone-stimulated butter-and-cow's (for baby COWS) milk frosting with processed sugar and perhaps artificial coloring? I agree that the answer here might just be "don't do the frosting," or, "find a simpler choice," or "use coconut milk."

But to suggest that there is something wrong with a perfectly natural/normal substance? Tsk Tsk. Stop drinking the mainstream Kool Aid.

But I dislike bananas so I'd suggest homemade coconut milk whipped cream.

Word. Why is gross to whip up some frosting for a baby human from a human boob, but "normal" to whip up some frosting for a baby human from a cow boob?

  • Not my style, but pay no mind to the snarky early responders. Haters gonna hate.

I would do a very lightly sweetened whipped cream, made of milk or coconut milk, whichever you normally drink.

I made a banana bread with 50% less sugar for my daughter and she loved it. We avoided (and still avoid) sugar.

  • Know I'm late to this post, but just wanted to share with you that I made a birthday cake for DD2 this year with pureed bananas on top. She's got a very sensitive stomach and a ton of allergies. It had a decent color to it and I thought it was tasty (we had an allergen free cake that I'd made with applesauce as one of the main ingredients).

    Good luck!

  • I think that theoretically, if you could make butter with your BM, you should be able to make a buttercream icing. But it would still need sugar to be anything other than whipped butter. But, IMO that kind of seems like a lot of effort, and would waste a lot of your milk. If you're trying to avoid sugar all together, I like PP idea of coconut milk whipped cream icing.

This. Just because the milk doesn't come from a cow, doesn't make it gross. It's breast milk, not toxic waste.

  • We made a banana cake for DS and his frosting was 1 avocado, 1 banana, 1T coconut oil, some fresh lemon juice to slow down the browning, and a splash of vanilla.  Pur?e it in the food processor and put it in thr fridge for a few mins before icing.  DS went craaaazy over it and it looked great!

This. I don't think it's the worst idea (though it is kinda weird), but I'm not sure how you'd make it into a frosting without adding the sugars, etc that would be in a regular frosting.  I think a plain cake with a fruit topping, or fresh fruit, would be a better option.

  • If you really want to use the BM and don't mind wasting a little, why use heavy cream or coconut milk? You could separate the cream from your milk and make whipped BM. I just gave my kid cake since I figured it was a one time thing, but I think you should easily be able to make whipped BM. Add some coloring agent (cranberry juice was a great idea) or blueberries and it'd be cute too.

  • OP, I can't think of any recipes. Most frostings only use a tbsp or so of milk anyway, so I guess it wouldn't hurt if you wanted to substitute it with BM, but it would still be a lot of butter and sugar.

I also don't understand why everyone is freaking out. I've made food and soap for my daughters using breastmilk. I'm not giving it to anyone else. I don't see what the big deal is.

  • try it out, I would be interested to know how it turns out.

why is human milk frosting any wierder than cow milk frosting? Its only for the baby to eat so who cares?
