Recommend a train set for 3 yr old

Im thinking something wooden.

I do not have a train table. My dh is in the air force and deployed so we live with my mom now so space is limited, plus we move a lot so i dont see a train table in our future ever.

so something easily taken up and down.

Re: Recommend a train set for 3 yr old

  • We have a Plan Toys wooden set and like it.  We originally had a plastic set that was a hand-me-down and I like the wooden set much better.  Interestingly, DS played with the train set all the time on the floor.  DH was able to get a train table for free and DS plays with the trains less now that they are on the train table...

  • We have a few of the Ikea sets.  We don't have a train table either.  DS builds his tracks all around the living room!  A train table would restrict him!

  • We LOVE our GeoTrax train set. We gave it to our oldest son just before he turned 3, if I remember correctly. And our youngest son started playing with it as soon as he turned 1 year old.

  • Imaginarium makes a pretty good wooden train set and it is far less expensive than the thomas wooden set.  He also builds his sets all over the living room - we just keep all the pieces stored in a storage cube!

  •                My son has both a Thomas wooden train set and a Geotrax train set.  He has a train table but he prefers to play (and line all the trains up) on the floor.  He likes the Thomas train but the Geotrax is much easier for him.  It's plastic and he can put it together himself.  The wooden Thomas tracks don't snap together- they just slide together.  That means the wooden ones come apart easily- the Geotrax stays together.  I highly recommend the Geotrax.

This.  I love the Imaginarium brand.  The tracks are identical to the Thomas ones but way cheaper.  We just got him a Thomas and Percy and he's good.  We do have a train table, which gets used for things other then trains too, but it would work just as well to have the tracks in a bin and let him build on the floor.

  • (new here but thought I'd jump in)

DS is obsessed with trains. We got him a train table but he never uses it. He prefers to build big huge tracks on the living room floor so he can have more room. We're probably going to sell the table to be honest.

We started out with a Thomas the Train wooden set, which we love. If you go to Toys R Us there is a generic brand (Can't remember the name) for about half the price. It fits all major brands of wooden tracks and you get twice as much. DS has never noticed the difference.

  • We have the Thomas trackmaster train sets.  It's plastic, but the pieces snap together easily and stay together well with the trains driving over them.  We do not have a train table and the boys put them together on the carpet.
