Whatever happened with the teacher thinking that your son was an ESL student?
Oh jeez, it was a mess. He *was* tested because we speak spanish at home and it was listed on his info. The principal pretty much blew me off when I expressed my concern that he was tested, without us knowing or being informed, and would not have known until we received a letter saying that he qualified for services. I guess he was so shy during the testing that he showed limited english skills because he wouldn't speak. It was only the third day of classes-he was probably freaked out! We turned down services and removed the spanish language from our info sheet.
He's doing so much better at school right now. He is really coming out of his shell, can read, add, subtract, and knows all of his letters. If only they had communicated with us! The school could have saved time and resources on his testing.
That is nuts. I teach ESL for K-1, and we do test every child who has a language other than English listed on the registration. We don't notify parents before testing, but it is mandated by the state that we notify parents of entrance into the program, and give them the option to opt-out. AND I wait until the end of Sept. to test kindergarteners b/c yes, they are still shell shocked and shy. As a teacher, it's hard not to be critical, but they did so many things wrong!! lol. Glad you straightened it out!
