I've always used Singer and have been happy with them. JoAnnes is having lots of sales on their sewing machines right now. The staff there is very knowledgable and helped me a lot.
In doing a little research to see when my Singer was made, it turns out my machine is 26 years old. I have the model, the "Debutante" (ha!) in the lower right hand side (with the yellow spool of thread) of this Singer ad. My mother picked it up at a garage sale about 10 or 12 years ago for $10.
However, Singer, today is not as much of a workhorse machine maker as they used to be. The Crafts board put together an FAQ on machines here:
I'm so cheap that unless I wanted extreme bells and whistles, I probably wouldn't buy a new sewing machine. I'd look for the features I want and then search Craigslist. My girl friend has purchased some very high quality machines for under $50 through CL. Of course, Brother sells some nice ones via Amazon (new) for <$200.
I recently looked for a used sewing machine in Austin, and came upon this great repair shop. The owner is super friendly and knowledgeable, and had several used machines for sale. Felt like a little piece of an older world ... I bought an used Singer from him, which we love.
