Baby Names

Is this a problem?

I love the name Julian for a boy. But my name is Juliet. Is that totally weird? Mother named Juliet, son named Julian? I'm not trying to name him after me or anything... I just love the name. :-/

Re: Is this a problem?

  • I like Julian, too, but I think you're right about it being too similar to your name.

  • I actually don't think it's a big deal. I mean many boys are named after their dads, so why not a spin off of the mom's name?

This!! Also I really like the name Julian!

This. I don't think they are too matchy. They don't rhyme.

  • It's not a big deal IMO. I love the name Julian, it's on my shortlist. Good Luck!

  • Sorry, no. You can't have a Juliet and a Julian.

Perhaps you'd like Lucian? It's similar, but doesn't have the whole basically-same-name-as-your-daughter thing going on.

I disagree! Julian is NMS. But I don't see why a mother can't have a name similar to their child's name. I know fathers named Kyle who named their daughters Kylie. Or Patricks who've named their daughter Patricia. So why is it when the mother names a child after her that there is a problem? (I know OP isn't trying to name him after her.)

This. My dad is Keith Michael. My oldest brother is Michael. My other brother is David Keith. So they were obviously named after my dad and no has any issues. My mom is Laura. I'm Laura Katharine (I use my mn but they liked the sound of Laura Katharine better than Katharine Laura). I LOVE that I'm named after my mom. No one ever questions it when a boy is named after a father but we get all weird when someone is named after their mom. I love being named after my mom that when I have my first daughter she will be "Laura Kate". I don't worry if people think it's weird. I love the name and would love it even if I wasn't carrying the name down. And it has an extra special meaning in my opinion.

So what if his name sounds like yours? I think it makes it that much more awesome!

  • I would steer clear of Julian because it is so similar to your name.

In all honesty though, my opinion is probably influenced by the fact that I think Julian sounds too feminine to suit a boy.

Juliet is the OP's name, not her child's.

To the OP, I don't think it's a problem at all. Like others have said, babies get named after their fathers all the time. And you're not even doing that--it just sounds similar enough to be kind of a nice connection, IMO. Go for it!

personally i hate it when parents name thier children the same or similar names as themselves....i  mean...concieded or what!!?!?!?!?! If you really love it you could always use it as a middle name...it doesnt HAVE to be a first name.
I again disagree. I plan on naming my own daughter after myself and my mother. I am far from "conceited" and consider myself to pretty much be a fairly humble person. I think it's rather harsh to tell people they are being conceited (concieded is not a word and conceded means to admit to something so I'm assuming you meant conceited) just because they like their own name. But to each their own. :::shrugs:::

I agree. I like using family names, and I think you've got a nice tradition going.

Personally, I think the "special snowflake" names are much more ego-driven than giving your child your own name... Made up spellings and names scream "look how creative I AM!" to me.

(I have an alternatively spelled name because my mom thought it looked prettier. It's been nothing but a hassle for me, though. Thanks, mom).

    Sorry for getting off topic.

  • Thanks guys. I really don't think it should be that big of a deal either... Anyone who knows me, my family and friends, knows that I wouldn't be naming him after me. I dont care about doing things that way, really. Have nothing against it, but its not my thing. I just love the name and I have a hard time loving boys names. And Ive always loved that name. Also, It's not like he will call me Juliet, or my husband really calls me Juliet. I will be referred to as Mom, or Babe, Hun, Hey, etc.. haha. I don't think it should be that weird, but I could see it being weird if I introduced myself to people who did not know either of us, and I had to say, "Hi I'm Juliet, and this is Julian." But I don't think I will have that instance happen too frequently. Also I the way I say them doesn't seem as weird to me because they dont rhyme and I kind of put the emphases on the syllables differently. Like with my name i say ju LEE et, putting more emphases on the lee sound. When I say Julian I say JU le inn, putting more emphases on the JU. haha sounds silly but I almost don't think they sound that alike, mainly just look more alike... I dont know. Ill let DH decide..... maybe. :)

I actually kinda agree with this b/c some people do it b/c they are conceited, but not everyone is like that, though. I really don't like it b/c it seems like parents are trying to rob their children of their individuality. To me, (and again, this is not ALWAYS the case) its basically the same as saying, "No, you can't be whoever you want. You have to be who I tell you to be and who I want you to be, and who I want you to be is ME!"

  • I have a friend named Allison.  She named her daughter Addison.  Totally different name, she didn't name her daughter after herself, but I always thought it was weird to have such a similar name.
