Babies: 9 - 12 Months

At what age did you give your baby Puffs??

My son just turned 7 months old and I am contemplating when to introduce puffs to him and what kind? He has two front top teeth and two front bottom teeth and more and more he is showing signs of reaching and grabbing for food. He has had the rice cereal and all the stage 1 Gerber meals and is on to Stage 2 Gerber Meals. My MIL when she was over visiting my son a couple of weeks ago bought some puffs for him but I didn't try the puffs with him yet since I wanted him to at least get through stage 1 foods first. Just the other day I decided to try a puff to see if my son would be able to eat/swallow something like this. I know on the can it says it melts in the mouth but when I went to try it it took me a long time for it to melt in my mouth. I really had to know to keep sucking on it before I could swallow the puff. I am worried about giving this to my son since he may not know how to know to suck on it before swallowing the puff and could possibly choke.  I guess I am just wondering how you introduced puffs to your babies, what age, and if there was a special kind of puffs you used that are easily dissolve in the mouth rather than continuously sucking on the until they eventually get to the point of being able to swallow something like that. I guess I fear that my son may choke if I give him a puff. Maybe there are techniques you can share with me to have him be able to eat a puff. I am a first time mom so all this is new to me so I am welcome to ideas.

  • I gave DS some around 6 months, however, I split them in 2.

  • Aiden was about 7 months when we started puffs, but he had no teeth. At first I split them in half, but he automatically started "chewing" them. He did rather well. After about 2-3 weeks we stopped splitting them, Good Luck!!

  • I was scared to and just gave them to DD this weekend, and she is almost 8 months. Like the pp's I cut them in half, but they were difficult for her to pick up that way and I noticed that she seemed to be gumming/chewing them just fine so I gave her a few whole ones and she did great! I might not have given them until she was 40 if it wasn't for my sister who said she gave them to both her boys at 6M and they had no teeth..DD has her bottom two.

  • We haven't started yet (7 months). I think he could handle them, but I'm waiting a little longer. The puffs package suggests waiting until they are crawling well with their belly up off the floor. I guess it coincides with when they are developmentally ready. He's almost there.

  • We've tried once and ds gagged, gagged, choked and then vomited his entire bottle. It did not go well. He does much better with things like mum mums or bitter biscuits where he can gnaw in it while holding it.

  • started trying around 6 months, wasnt really consistent with it til 7 months though.
  • We started puffs around 7 months.  He wasn't great at picking them up at first, but had no problems gumming them.  He still doesn't have any teeth.  Their gums are very hard and mash the puffs well.
  • one thing to note is that they all contain wheat, so we didn't give them to DD until we had given her mixed wheat cereal, and made sure there were no allergy issues or anything.
  • I gave DS Cheerios for the first time last week and he did fine with them.
