Single Parents

Advice needed.

I am 28 weeks pregnant.  The father decided in October he didn't want to be with me, so at almost 30 years old I am now living with my parents again until I can get my feet on the ground.

My question is...what should I be doing now to protect my rights?  Should I be looking into child support?  Should I meet with an attorney?  Should I be looking for medical for my child since I'm obviously not going to get the information from him to add him to his insurance?  I'm on shared cost MediCal since I did not have health insurance when I got pregnant.

I'm feeling alone, abondoned, and overwhelmed.  I don't know where to start and what to do.

Any advice would be appreciated.

 Thank you.

  • Meeting with an attorney is always a good thing to do.

    This.

And, yes, start looking into child support.  I'd get the form, and fill out as much as you can now so you're not worrying about getting it done when LO is born.  Once your baby is born, complete the form and send it in ASAP.

I would attempt to get info from your ex on health insurance.  Send him an e-mail.  If he doesn't respond, send him another one, and repeat over and over if necessary.  If nothing else, it creates a paper trial which shows that you were trying and he was uncooperative.  Also, find out what you need to do to have your baby covered by state health insurace and do as much as you can ahead of time so all you have to do it complete the process once LO is born.
